RESUMO:
After nearly 40 years since the first cases of HIV infection, it is estimated that 982.129 people have contracted the virus in Brazil untill June 2018. HIV/AIDS is a multiple-sided disease that can be influenced by a variety of factors, whether demographic, socio-spatial, financial, gender, etc. There are several fields of knowledge that study it, including the approach of the Social Representations. Objective: To analyze the Social Representations of University students, participants of an University Extension Project about HIV/AIDS. Methodology: This is a quanti-qualitative study, done in two moments, with students of the Interdisciplinary Bachelors of the Federal University of Bahia, who participated in the University Extension Project called AIDS: Educating to demystify, in the years 2017 and 2018. The first step was to identify the structure of the students' representations about HIV. Then, the Social Representations themselves were discussed. For data collection, the Test of Free Association of Words (TALP) was used, as well as semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed according to the Theory of Social Representations, proposed by Moscovici, and according to Content Analysis, proposed by Bardin, in order to explore the complexity of participants' responses. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Nursing School of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) and the participants signed a Free Informed Term of Consent. Results and Discussion: In contrast to what happens in 10 other Brazilian states, HIV/AIDS detection rates in Bahia state shows a tendency to increase, with an increase of 11% in 2017, when compared to 2007. The cases are concentrated, for men and women, at the age of 25 to 39 years. In relation to the students representational structure about HIV, we can realize the association between HIV and disease, witch composes the Central Nucleus of these representations about the vírus, although there is now a health care that can prevent the AIDS. We can make a lot of reflections by analyzing the TALP and interviews, especially the perception of young people about the non-use of condoms in sexual relations. According to them, this practice consists the main risk behavior related to HIV infections, however the same students do not consider themselves exposed to this risk, even practicing unprotected sex. This indicates a potencial transference of vulnerability perception, when students associates HIV infections to particular 'groups', or situations. Considerations: Although we find studies about HIV/AIDS social representations, the topic in question deals with several issues, not only about the virus or the syndrome. Knowledge about issues that are directly or indirectly related to the virus have been identified, such as risk behaviors, forms of transmission, treatment, etc. It has also been realized that certain individual and collective aspects may influentiate these representations. HIV carries to this day a series of elements related to health and disease processes, such as vulnerability factors, forms of prevention, sociocultural factors, pauperization, among others. Taking this into consideration, as well as the increase of infection among young people, it is of great importance to encourage research and actions specifically aimed to the university students. In addition, it should be encouraged to create spaces for dialogues, where students can express their opinions, doubts and questions
