Intervention proposal for the railway complex of Ribeirão Vermelho and its workshop

The railway complex of Ribeirão Vermelho, is an example of Brazilian railway architecture, formed by 10 edifications, built between the end of the XIX century and beginning of the XX century. It’s safeguarded on municipal instance, since 1990, and on state instance, by the State Institute of Artistic and Historical Heritage of Minas Gerais (IEPHA-MG) since 2014. Most of its edifications are abandoned since the 80’s decade and its lack of use added to the local ambient aspects, that includes occurrence of floods, led some of the buildings to ruin. The safeguard, despite recognizing the importance of the complex, haven’t been able to stop its degradation or guarantee its preservation. This paper presents the development of an intervention proposal for this cultural heritage, grounded on consolidated methodologies of the restauration field of study, and substantiated on a large collect of data about the complex, its region and its railroad. It’s a propose that recognizes the particularities of the complex and encourages a new use, lined up with today socioeconomic dynamics of the city of Ribeirão Vermelho and aims to enable its preservation to the next generations.
