SUMMARY:

This study addresses women's mental health with the aim of analyzing the
implications of gender discourses in the production of psychological distress in women
assisted at a Regional Health Polyclinic located in a small town in southwest Bahia. This is a
study with a qualitative and exploratory approach, in which sociodemographic questionnaires
and semi-structured interviews will be used as data production techniques. The material
produced from such instruments will be analyzed using the Content Analysis method, by
thematic categories, by Laurence Bardin. Studies that address the theme of women's mental
health, from a gender perspective, are relevant insofar as they allow us to think about
psychological suffering and illness as sociocultural, historical and relational constructions that
are crossed by gender discourses. In this way, they contribute to promoting changes in the
scientific paradigm, breaking with reductionist and biologizing perspectives, in order to
promote a critical, ethical and political professional performance. It is hoped that this study
can contribute to the literature, which is still incipient, on the subject, as well as subsidize the
construction of an instrument to guide care to be used by the multidisciplinary team of the
Regional Health Polyclinic of the State of Bahia, with the aim of objective of assisting in the
recognition of women in psychological distress due to gender issues, in order to refer them to
psychological assistance.
