ELABORATION AND VALIDATION OF A SCALE TO EVALUATE STRESS IN HOSPITALIZED CHILDREN
Keywords: Emotional stress; Child hospitalization; Rating scale
Hospitalization in childhood is an essential source of stress, as it requires the child to adapt to this new environment. Stressors inherent to the hospital tend to increase children's fear and perception of pain, reducing their adherence to treatment. Measuring the stress level during hospitalization becomes necessary in managing and preventing harmful repercussions on child health and development. Thus, this study aims to develop and validate a scale to assess stress in hospitalized children. This is a mixed (quali-quanti) descriptive and exploratory study that will be developed in three stages: 1) literature review and interviews/questionnaire applied to children and one of their guardians to construct the stress scale items; 3) validation of the suitability of the instrument's content by a group of judges (specialists in the area); 3) and the application of the final version of the instrument in a group of hospitalized children in order to assess validity and reliability criteria. Data analysis will rely on the Content Analysis proposed by Bardin and statistical analysis with the aid of the statistical package Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25.0. It is expected that the study corroborates the scientific literature on stress in hospitalized children and that the instrument, duly validated, will be used to measure the patient's evolution throughout the treatment and contribute to the improvement of care practices.
