The man of the law is a recurring character in the Machadian work. However, Esau and Jacob (1904),
their penultimate novel, set in the period of the Monarchy-Republic transition in Brazil, raises the possibility of
analyzing a specific subject, from his decision to enter the legal course, until the beginning of his journey.
In public life, which was commonly the end pursued by the young of their kind. Thus, this work aims to draw an
interdisciplinary study, enabling the dialogue between Law, History and Literature in the analysis of literary work,
seeking to understand the unfolding of the inauguration of the first Brazilian legal courses, its importance for
the political directions of the Empire. and what is the place of the man of law, educated in these institutions,
as Brazil was moving towards the Republic.
