SUMMARY:

In the 1950s and 1960s, in a context marked by political tension and the consolidation
of different perspectives on the formation, history, and culture of Brazil, there were
multiple discourses on nationality, regarding which there was intense
repercussion/debate in the press, in the media, academia, and art. The thesis of popular
Brazil has been projected in historical, literary, and social discourse since the 1920s and
was theorized with more emphasis in the 1950s, based on the debate propagated at the
Instituto Superior de Estudos Brasileiros (ISEB). The vision of the populist country
came to fruition in the heated debate on national politics in the mid-twentieth century
and was introduced as a thesis in studies of Brazilian social sciences during the 1960s as
the most emblematic mark of national politics in that period. This binomial debate
calcined the bifurcated national speech between the ideal of state reform and the
denunciation of political demagoguery and alienation of the masses. The purpose of this
thesis is to investigate the movement of continuity and discontinuity between popular
and populism in the films Black God White Devil (1964), Maranhão 66 (1966), Terra
em transe and Antônio das Mortes (1969), by Bahian filmmaker Glauber Rocha in the
light of the historical chronicle, popular collective memory, and sociological theses
contemporary to film narratives. The plots divided between the revolutionary
perspective and pessimism/frustration, the popular characters sometimes tending
towards political and social militancy, sometimes influenced by alienation, the political
and popular leaders converging in the fight against oppression or transversality by
demagoguery are basic factors for the composition of a continuous-discontinuous
representation of struggle and repression, resistance and censorship, resilience and
resignation, the bifurcation between popular and populism in the discourse of
nationality proposed by the Bahian author in his filmography between 1964 and 1969.
