SUMMARY:

This work aims to investigate and analyze the presence of the HIV and aids theme in Brazilian narratives. Through a bibliographical research, we have sought to determine how events outside the narrative universe have influenced the creation of images about the virus and the disease in national productions since the emergence of the epidemic by the end of last century. Thus, we observe how marginalized groups have been represented in works addressing this theme, particularly in the way female characters, Black individuals, homosexuals, among other subjects, appear in the selected texts. The corpus of this work consists of narratives by various authors who have, in some way, addressed the studied topic in texts published as books and with circulation among the reading public. As a theoretical framework to assist in the analyses, ideas from a diverse range of thinkers have been used to discuss the issues raised during the research process. Among the materials used as theoretical support, Susan Sontag's (1989) work stands out, with her approach to the metaphors generated in and by discourses about the epidemic; Sejo Carrascosa (2022) and the debate on hegemonic masculinity and the devaluation of bodies outside this logic; Eduardo Jardim (2019) and his overview of the epidemic; Italo Moriconi (2014; 2020) and his rich discussion on literature with the theme of HIV/aids; Larissa Pelúcio and Richard Miskolci (2009), through the debate on the repathologization of dissident sexualities; Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak (2010) and Regina Dalcastagnè (2012) with their reflections on the discursive and literary production of minority groups and their value within culture; Stuart Hall (2016) and the notion of representation; Cristian Alberti (2020) with his discussion of what he called "virally hegemonic discursivity," among many others.
