SUMMARY:

Moving in the opposite direction of many women's achievements, violence against women keeps spreading alarmingly throughout different places in the world, and in most cases the aggressor is someone very close to the victim. Considered a global public health problem by the World Health Organization, gender-based violence is an issue that encompasses the entire social system, therefore promoting discussions in several knowledge fields. Literature is not exempt from this debate,  and nowadays it has been contributing to promoting greater awareness on such an issue, making room for new points of view. Although forms of women's oppression have long been present in literary texts, the way of narrating them has changed: the theme is now debated under a particular subjectivity, in defense of women and their social performance. Following this direction, Italian writer Manuela Lunati's autobiographical novel Giochi di Mano, published in 2013, depicts a very well-drawn portrait of domestic violence against women from the victim's perspective. In order to encourage a debate, a translation of the novel is proposed. From the translation of Giochi di Mano, based on Christiane Nord's functionalist theory, theoretical and practical issues concerning literary translation are discussed, highlighting translation as an exercise in alterity, female authorship and the pertinence of feminist translation for this project.
