SUMMARY:

The present ongoing research brings a discussion about the female representation of the Harley Quinn character at the construction of DC Comics’ comics. This work is based on the social theory of language, the Applied Linguistics (AL). Its purpose is to discuss how the female representations’ social identities are shaped on DC’s comic books. Therefore, this investigation focusses on making, under the villain’s perspective, a critical discussion about representativity, instead the traditional approach that sheds more light over the heroes. That said, the objectives that will guide this investigation are: discuss how the female identity’s representations are configured on the Harley Quinn’s character, as well as analyze how the representation of female identity builds the woman’s empowerment at Harley Quinn’s character. As theoretical-methodological assumption, the research is qualitative, has documental nature and is divided as follows. The first chapter entitles the course of the research, where I describe the trajectory, justification and the procedures for the analyses. The second chapter brings the comic books into light: more than stories in comics, they are social practices, in which I discuss the importance of realize the comics not just as entertainment’s product, but also as social practices’ product. In the third chapter I discourse about the representations and identities assumed by Harley Quinn’s character at the comics. Thus, this research dialogues with the works about language and comics whose authors are Bakhtin (2003), Moita Lopes (2003), Marchuschi (2011), Eisner (1999), Mccloud (2006) and Vergueiro (2010). Also, it is in accord with the works about identity and social representations whose authors are Faria (2012), Hall (2000), Woodward (2000), Silva (2000), Moscovici (1973, 2007) and Jodelet (2019).
