SUMMARY:

There is a lot of discussion in the literature related to the ‘verb-second’ effect.
Several authors defend the idea that medieval Romance languages, while some
others deny this concept. In this thesis we will use as a point of reference the
fact that Romance languages, especially Spanish, were the languages with V2
effect. We will try to seek in this dissertation hypotheses about the acquisition of
this phenomenon in Spanish medieval. To achieve this objective, we will
analyse the data of Pinto (2011). Also, we will take into consideration that the
studies concerning the linguistic transformations usually are deeply embedded
in the past – we will investigate the scientific data acquired from the text dated
between XII and XV centuries (language-E) and seek for evidences of
acquisition of a language-I [+V2] in the medieval Spanish. Additionally, we will
review the hypotheses related to the acquisition of [+V2], as well as internal and
external factors that possibly might have impacted the process. The analysis
will not leave out the sociolinguistic context and the situation of multilingualism
existing in the Iberian Peninsula in that historical époque. That scenario
motivated big competition of grammars, which also will motivate our
investigation of possible contacts between the nations (meaning the ethnic
structure from that era) – we will try to discover whether such contacts created
fruitful input to children acquisition of [+V2].  After that we will try to dig further
into internal configurations for an acquisition of V2 effect and look for responses
for two main macro questions stated in this dissertation: (I) is the data to which
the children were exposed a fruitful environment for their [+V2] acquisition?; (II)
what conditions are the decisive factors for children to decide whether a
structure is a V2 – the occupation of any XP in the initial position or the specific
one XP?
