MAPPING THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS OF LANGUAGE POLICY AND PLANNING IN SCIENCE AND HIGHER EDUCATION FOR INTERNATIONALIZATION: THE UEFS CASE
Language Policies. LPP for SHE. Internationalization. Higher Education.
Over the years, Brazilian universities have developed the need to undertake Language Policy and Planning for Science and Higher Education (LPP for SHE) (OLIVEIRA et al., 2017) for internationalization (De Wit, 2002, KNIGHT, 2003, 2004). The internationalization movement of Higher Education influenced by external agents, such as the World Bank and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, demands that institutions structure their institutional language policies (CALVET, 1996, 2002; OLIVEIRA, 2013) so that the internationalization process can be developed more effectively. Moreover, this qualitative case study aims to map how LPP for SHE are being built at the Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (UEFS), in addition to identifying how they affect the Higher Education Institution's (HEI) internationalization actions. The research is characterized as a two-phase study, counting firstly with documental analysis about the LPP for SHE for internationalization and then interviews about the perceptions of the international advisory and the coordination of Nucli - Idiomas sem fronteiras program of UEFS about the process of developing these policies. The results also indicate a lack of awareness of the academic community on the issue of languages, the demand to develop a collaborative, inclusive and post-monolingual institutional linguistic policy and, in addition, the need to strengthen partnerships with HEIs that can cooperate for a more equitable and harmonious internationalization process.
