Produções metalinguísticas baianas do século XIX: a Grammatica Portugueza Philosophica de Ernesto Carneiro Ribeiro

This study is related to the History of Written Culture and Schooling in Brazil. Our general objective is to analyze the processes of schooling and grammatization of the Portuguese language in Brazil, in the second half of the nineteenth century, when Brazilians began to produce metalinguistics materials for Brazilians (CAVALIERE, 2001; FÁVERO; MOLINA, 2006), based on Ernesto Carneiro Ribeiro. As specific objectives, we intended (i) to present the performance of the Bahian grammarian, philologist and professor Ernesto Carneiro Ribeiro (1839-1920), who was a poor black man, graduated in Medicine at the College of Medicine of Bahia. He became an important agent of schooling in Salvador at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. Some aspects of his life and work will be considerated, characterizing his path as a teacher and from the concepts adopted in his philological-linguistic works; (ii) to analyze his Grammatica Portugueza Philosophica (GPP) (1881), considered as a cultural object that normalizes and represents a synchrony of language; (iii) to prepare a commented edition of the work. According to the analysis of its grammar, the aim is: a) to place the GPP in the set of productions by Ernesto Carneiro Ribeiro on language; b) to describe it as a pedagogical tool, considering methodology, theories related to the criteria used for grammatical classification at different levels of language analysis. The proposal is inserted in the fields of History of Written Culture (CASTILLO GÓMEZ, 2003), Social History of Language (MATTOS E SILVA, 2003; FARACO, 2016), History of Linguistic Ideas (ORLANDI, 2003; AUROUX, 2009; COLOMBAT et al., 2017) and the Historiography of Language (VIEIRA, 2018). The research is based on documentary and bibliographical sources, about the trajectory of Ernesto Carneiro Ribeiro, as a teacher and as an author of pedagogical instruments. As partial considerations, we noticed the importance of his biobibliography, with identification and study of a rich collection of linguistic-philological productions in publishers and periodicals from the 19th and 20th centuries, in order to understand the totality of the evolution of his ideas about language and about the teaching; it was also verified, from the description of the Introductory part and the Syntax of the GPP, a dialogue with other philosophical works that preceded it without proposing innovations in light of what had been presented by tradition. The need for a commented edition arises from the possibility of making the work available to the general public and to the specialized public, in addition to being able to set up a database with studies on pedagogical instruments by Brazilian authors. The relevance of the work consists in surveying Carneiro Ribeiro's biobibliography and locating his philosophical grammar in the set of his works, overcoming its little visibility in the history of grammatization in Brazil, by recognizing his contributions regarding reflections on normativization processes of the Portuguese language in Brazil.
