SUMMARY:

This thesis aims to propose an-other option to study multilingual’s identity performances on Facebook based on the concept of translanguaging. Such an option draws on contributions of fields that revolve around the effects of mobility, globalization, digital technology and of the monolingual paradigm in the ways we approach language and identity. Thus, the theoretical and methodological foundations of translingual perspective as a border thinking will lead us to investigate identity practices through the notions of translanguaging, semiotic and experiential repertoires, heteroglossia, identity positionings and performance and performativity. This is a qualitative and netnographic research, whose data were collected through the following instruments: Facebook posts analysis and observations, online questionnaires and interviews conducted with research subjects from four post-colonial countries. Based on the data analysis and discussion, this thesis problematizes identity work within a multidimensional proposal which involves and it is involved by the decolonial, spatiotemporal and mediating relations of translingual practices. Focus will be on the possibilities provided by contemporary perspectives on multilingual practices in different time-space configurations in which a wide range of semiotic resources is employed for the negotiation of meaning. Therefore, this thesis not only proposes translanguaging as an option for studies that do justice to identity positionings on Facebook, but also considers how the tensions between fixity and fluidity in language practices can challenge our own research practices in times of superdiversity.
