SUMMARY:

This research aimed to investigate the possible contributions of smartphones to intercultural teaching/learning of English in public schools. It is important that language learners are encouraged to develop intercultural sensitivity so that they can explore cultures, learn about other ways of seeing the world, and learn to respect diversity. The smartphone, which has several features and allows access to the internet in the palm of the hand, can be a strong ally in this process. To understand the possibilities of using the smartphone for intercultural teaching/learning of English, we analyzed the perceptions of high school students from IFBA - Campus Jacobina about their learning experiences and expectations, the role of the smartphone in English learning, the relationship between language and culture, and about cycles of intercultural activities carried out with the support of smartphones. The relevance of this work is to promote reflections on the pedagogical use of the smartphone and on the intercultural teaching/learning of English in public schools.
