By analyzing and discussing a couple of theoretical assumptions, the purpose of this
thesis is to propose teaching practices for Portuguese language teaching, as a second
language, for the deaf in the view of intercultural approach. Inserted in the field of
Applied Linguistics, this is a bibliographical and interdisciplinary study, based on
qualitative-interpretative and hermeneutic-phenomenological analyses. For the writing
of the theoretical framework, we debated the following issues: a historical overview on
Portuguese teaching for the deaf in Brazil; the challenges and emerging issues based
on legal documents; our conceptions about language, culture and identity; and,
theoretical reflections on the topic ‘bilingual education for the deaf’. Qualitatively and
quantitatively, the theses and the dissertations published in Brazil from 1996 to 2019
were examined. Qualitatively, the curricular proposals as concerns Portuguese
teaching for the deaf were analyzed, considering the following documents: São Paulo
(2008; 2019); Portugal (2011); Faria-Nascimento et al. (2021); Moreira et al. (2021);
Pereira et al. (2021); Silva et al. (2021); Bernardino et al. (2021); and Cruz et al. (2021).
Based on the analyses carried out, the proposition of a curriculum of Portuguese
teaching for the deaf was glimpsed in light of complex thinking; and, still on the
perspective of complex thinking, Portuguese teacher training for the deaf was
discussed. Subsequently, the principles of an intercultural approach are established,
as the pedagogical practices for Portuguese teaching in this approach are presented.
Final considerations presented as nonconclusive reflections pointed out the need and
the urgency of implanting or implementing public policies for linguistic education
practices that recognize and value Portuguese and sign languages equally.
