The thesis Semi-diplomatic edition and lexical studies of the Termos de Exames of public instruction in Bahia – 19th century manuscript book presents the Termos de Exames, a book containing 132 minutes of the procedures undertaken during the exams for public teaching in the State of Bahia held between 1835 and 1858. The book was written by six scriptores, duly identified by their names and their respective roles, in most minutes. This work starts with the physical description of the manuscript: its conservation state, composition, numbering of the pages, characteristics of the space holding the handwritten text and of the writing itself, capitalization, combination of words and abbreviations. Then, is proceeds to the rhetorical study of the fixed structure of the minutes as a textual genre, as well as its variants in the datatio of the minutes, with emphasis on the dating text, the use of numerals and designations for the city of Salvador. The semi-diplomatic edition of the book is presented next, followed by the lexicological study, which emphasizes the linguistic change of certain ‘lexias’ (lexical items) that took place between the 19th and 21st centuries. Such ‘lexias’ were grouped into lexical fields to then be the target of lexicological and documental surveys. The found lexical fields were the disciplines of the educational system; administrative regions; documents; educational institutions; teaching methods; positions, functions and qualifications in the administrative, civil, ecclesiastical, educational, judicial and military fields. The documentary research brought elucidative elements, notably in the field of teaching methods, such as the so-called mutual teaching and simultaneous teaching, and in administrative regions, such as province, town, village, settlement. Also noteworthy are the ‘lexias’ oppositor, lente and Director Geral dos Estudos, nomenclatures that are no longer usual, the latter because it is a role that no longer exists. Due precisely to the loss of comprehensibility of some ‘lexias’, a glossary was created, based on lexicographic techniques and semasiological and onomasiological methodologies. Two objectives are fulfilled with the semi-diplomatic edition and respective glossary: to facilitate, for today's readers, the access to the history of public education in Bahia in the 19th century; and to add new research to Philology, with the potential to become the basis for other studies in the fields of Education, History and of Philology itself.
