RESUMO:

For the qualification of this doctoral thesis, the preliminary results of the data referring to the Northeast and Southeast regions of Brazil are presented regarding the feminine gender of the words thief, chief, German and president, as well as identifying the forms used for the concepts' woman who steals', 'woman who heads',' woman born in Germany 'and' woman in the presidency '. The corpus consisted of audio speech recordings, collected on the spot, based on the Morphosyntactic Questionnaire of the Atlas Linguistic Project of Brazil - ALiB Project (NATIONAL COMMITTEE, 2001), to informants who meet the criteria that contemplate naturalness and residence in city in selected locations. At this moment, there were 680 informants, being 344 from the Northeast and 336 from the Southeast in 158 locations in the network of research points, with 78 locations in the Northeast and 80 locations in the Southeast. The informants were distributed according to the social variables diatopy, sex, age group (age group I: 18-30 years and age group II: 50-65 years) and educational level (elementary and university), the latter only in the capitals. Thus, these variables were controlled in order to carry out a sociolinguistic analysis of the phenomenon. In addition to the analysis of the data found, there is a theoretical discussion about the grammatical category of gender and its establishment as a flexural and gender morphological process from the point of view of social and historical. The research is based on the theoretical and methodological principles of Dialectology, Pluridimensional Geolinguistics and Variationist Sociolinguistics.
