In this doctoral qualifying exam text, I discuss the theoretical and methodological framework that underlies the adoption of the translingual perspective as a border thinking proposal (MIGNOLO, 2000) for the study of multilinguals’ language practices on Facebook. For that purpose, I draw on concepts such as translanguaging/translingual practices (CANAGARAJAH, 2013a; GARCÍA; WEI, 2014; ROCHA; MACIEL, 2015), hetero/transglossia (BAKHTIN, 1981; DOVCHIN; PENNYCOOK; SULTANA, 2018), identity positioning ((HARRÉ; VAN LANGENHOVE, 1999), and performance and performativity (BUTTLER, 1990; PENNYCOOK, 2007; CANAGARAJAH, 2013b) as a way to articulate the main theoretical assumptions of this investigation with data gathered from analysis of Facebook texts posted by the research participants. Hence, I will focus on the limitations and possibilities offered by multilingual language practices constructs to the studies on online communication (BARTON; LEE, 2015), in which a range of multisemiotic resources are employed to the construction of meaning. Moreover, I present the methodological process of this research, through the discussion of its netnographic nature (KOZINETS, 2010), methods and instruments, the sociolinguistic profiles of the participants and the contributions that different theoretical lenses such as multiliteracies (ROJO, 2012; BAPTISTA, 2016) and computer-mediated discourse analysis approaches (HERRING, 2004; RECUERO, 2014) can bring to the development of digital language research. Therefore, in this text, I outline the foundations of a translingual proposal to the analysis of contemporary language practices, as well as I reflect upon its decolonial affordances to the study of language and identity in superdiverse contexts (VERTOVEC, 2007).
