RESUMO:

The present research in progress aims to reveal the social representations of English language professors about teaching English in public schools in Bahia. English has the representation of a lower discipline in Brazilian education (LIMA, 2011, 2013), even English language having the status of international or lingua franca (Jenkins, 2007; Siqueira, 2011), and being one of the engines for the internet and globalization (KUMARAVADIVELU, 2006). This work is justified by the relevance that the practical part of the Language course - English language has at the time of graduation. Knowing the representations of the professors can give clues as to how the undergraduates are prepared for the challenge of teaching in public schools. The general objective of the research is to investigate how the social representations of professors about English language teaching in public schools are constructed. The specific objectives are a) Understand and analyze how social representations of English language teaching in the public sector guide the performance of  professors; b) Find out what strategies professors use to prepare students for teaching English in the public context; c) Investigate the representations that  professors build about English language students in the Language course; d) Analyze how partnerships between public schools and universities work in which the  professors work and what characteristics they present; e) Understand how the social representations of the professors contribute to the formation of the undergraduates. The theoretical contribution of the research is outlined based on social representations ((MOSCOVICI, 1981, 2011; JODELET, 2001; ABRIC, 1994; ORNELLAS, 2011b), in constructs of psychoanalysis (FREUD, 1925/2009; LACAN, 1992) and in discourse as a social bond (DUNKER et al., 2017; COELHO, 2006; QUINET, 1999; FERRARI, PELLIÓN, 2011; FERRARI, 2010; RAVINOVISH, 2001) . Data analysis will be supported by critical discourse analysis, and are based on ideological constructs that circumscribes the materiality of language (DIJK, 2017; FAIRCLOUGH, 2001). The methodology uses qualitative approach and it is ethnographic. Moreover, narrative research (CLANDININ; CONNELLY, 2015) also delineates the construction of the instruments and the generation of data. Three instruments were elaborated: written narratives, oral interviews with semi-structured questionnaires and observation of classes. Besides, the documents that organize the practical subjects of the Language course - English language, that is, project pedagogical and regiments will also be analyzed, if any. The survey has six respondents from universities, professors who teach in the practical part of the aforementioned course. Data analysis will be done according to each instrument and then a triangulation will be performed to validate the data found.
