RESUMO:

In this Master's dissertation, we present the research on proparoxytones syncope in Afro-Brazilian rural communities that make up the database of Bahia State Vertentes Project, coordinated by the Professors Dante Lucchesi (UFF) and Gredson dos Santos (UFBA). The four afro-brazilian communities, Cinzento, Helvécia, Rio de Contas and Sapé, are part of the Afro-Brazilian Portuguese vernacular speech collection. Proparoxytone’s syncope is a variable process involving a change in the syllable structure. Applying it, one or more phonemes are erased in postonic syllable, which turns proparoxytones into paroxytones, xícara > xícra (cup), útero > útro (uterus), óculos > óclus (glasses), abóbora > abobra (pumpkin), among others. The main objective of this paper is to analyze the syncope in the proparoxytones words in the afro-brazilian rural communities of Bahia's state, expanding the description of portuguese at the phonic level of the language. Twelve interviews classified by gender (male and female), education (illiterate and semi-illiterate) and age group (20 to 40 years, 40 to 60 years, and over 60 years) were selected from the database. In total there were forty-eight interviews, twelve from each community. There were eight hundred and sixteen data collected from the interviews of the studied communities that underwent a statistical analysis of the Goldvarb X program, considering some variables already analyzed in other research. The theories used for this study were Variationist Sociolinguistics, Phonological Theories about syllable and stress. This research was based on some studies that analyzed syncope in proparoxytones, such as Amaral (1999), Silva (2006), Lima (2008), Santana (2008), Ramos (2009) e Chaves (2011).  After the round in the statistical program, the groups that demonstrated favoring syncope in the proparoxytones were phonological context following the postonic vowel, trace of the postonic vowel articulation, community, phonological context preceding the postonic vowel, tonic syllable structure and schooling.
