The present work proposes an investigation on literacy practices in the teaching of Portuguese language in classrooms of the final years of basic school in Amargosa-BA. For that purpose, such education was investigated in two classrooms of such level of education, 7th and 8 th year, respectively, owing to the acceptance of teachers of native language to such academic research. Based on the understanding that literacy practices are capable of transforming the individual socioculturally, it is understood how literacy is related to the exercise of citizenship, in its broader direction, but also the appropriation and use of the information and knowledge produced for the humanity. Taking into account the relationship between literacy and the school-agency, a privileged space, as it were, for diversities, actions and formative meanings, we seek, from observations to mother-tongue classes, to describe perceptions about language teaching and its imbrication in literate practices, as well as the methodologies employed by Portuguese language teachers, regarding reading and writing, in their pedagogical performances in the Amargosense city. By fitting in a qualitative research - interpretativist ethnographic - in which the facts were observed, recorded, analyzed and interpreted in their natural scenes, in order to grasp the meanings conferred by the participating subjects, such research focused, specifically on: in a school of Basic Education, currently administered by the state school system, located in the municipality of Amargosa-BA. Assuming that language is a socially constructed activity, which allows multiple interpretations, corroborates positions and is constitutive of social practices of reading and writing, the work brings relevant theoretical frameworks, namely: conceptions of language, education, text, teaching formation, beyond literacy(ies), reading, writing, multiliteracy(ies), doing justice to the field of Applied Linguistics, which comprises the language in use, paying attention to changes, manifestations and social realities. Authors such as Antunes (2003, 2019, 2010), Britto (2005), Freire (2003), Hanks (2008), Marcuschi (2008), Orlandi (2011), Kleiman (1995, 2002), Street (1984, 2003, 2014), Rojo and Moura (2012, 2019), are examples of referenced bibliographic bases. Such allied bibliographies to field research - with the application of questionnaires and observations to the Portuguese language classes - sought to constitute the researched scene, regarding the literacy practices. It is observed, through such work, that the mother-tongue teachers, in that city, expose in their classes socio-communicative performances, considering the socio-contemporary character to which we are part, but still keep reductionisms to the reading and writing practices, especifically, turning to normativity and grammar/orthographic prescription. Even recognizing the social and historical-political functions of language, we witness in the school space a resistance to multiple semiosis immersed in the discursive practices of all social subjects.
