RESUMO:

Safeguarding the memory and, consequently, the history of national and local society is the guiding goal of this work. To this end, it starts with the retrieval of documents dealing with an institution with a secular presence in international and national territories - the Santas Casas de Misericórdia. Thus, it deals with the Holy Houses of Portugal and Bahia, from the records contained in two manuscripts under the tutelage of the Public Archive of the state of Bahia. These manuscripts, numbered 604 and 604-1 respectively, record information about the privileges granted by the kings of Portugal to these Confraternities in the colonial period. Based on the assumptions of philology - science of text - it is intended to offer to the general public and to scholars from various fields of knowledge, the records contained in these documents through a conservative edition. This thesis, entitled Document, history and memory: conservative edition of Manuscripts 604 and 604-1 of the Holy House of Mercy of Portugal and Bahia, intends, besides editing the texts, to present an overview of the Public Archive of the State of Bahia and its performance in the preservation of memory by collecting, storing and making available historical documents of Bahia in past times. Trace a historical panorama of the Holy Houses of Mercy in Portugal, Brazil and Bahia. It then presents the manuscripts under study, highlighting their external and internal characteristics.
