RESUMO:

Twenty-first century Brazil showcases a notion of antiracism better understood over a
continuum of nuances. Similarly, in the precedent years to the abolition of 1888, the anti-slavery
positioning was in vogue. This context gives rise to the following questions: what does it mean
to be antiracist in Brazil nowadays? How is this identity constructed? What do this notion and
the anti-slavery identity from the late 1800s have in common? Lastly, what discursive and
argumentative similarities can be perceived in the construction of these identities? It is
hypothesized that anti-racism and anti-slavery positionings would mobilize similar and
interrelated discursive-argumentative behaviors by forming an interdiscursive network. This
would cover racist statements (in a cut that began in 2000 to date, having the sanction of the
Law 10.639 / 03 as a milestone), as well as slavery statements said to be contrary to slavery. As
such, it is proposed that anti-racist and anti-slavery behaviors in both written and oral texts be
interpreted in the light of Mikhail Bakhtin, Michel Pechêux, Chaïm Perelman and Lucie
Olbrechts-Tyteca's theoretical approaches. This study is bibliographical and documentary in
nature. The first methodological procedure consisted in collecting and analyzing corpora
composed of statements materializing discourses within specific ideological fields. Each
corpus, the "anti-slavery corpus" and the "anti-racist corpus" one, is related to a specific time
period. This way, texts from legal, parliamentary and journalistic /mediatic contexts such as
bills, minutes, petitions, parliamentary speeches, newspaper articles, interviews, etc. were
examined. Also, due to the advent of technology, statements in both televised or online form
for the current period were also included in this study. As a result, it is expected that the
proximity between discourses and the antiracist and anti-slavery arguments will be presented
qualitative, as well as the updating of the latter in the former.
