RESUMO:

This study belongs to the field of investiogation of the social linguistic History of Brazil, related to the formation of Brazilian Portuguese and the impacts of schools in this society (MATTOS e SILVA, 2004).This study also dialogues with the principles of Cultural History and History of written Culture. (CASTILLO GÓMEZ, 2003). Mattos e Silva (2004) presents hypothesis of works in order to recover a history of Brazilian Portuguese. Among this hypothesis is “the field that will move in order to reconstruct a History of social linguistic of Brazil”. From this field of research, the author proposes two strands of investigation. One of them is the reconstruction of the history of schooling in Brazil, throught linguistic polices from jesuits or Marquis of Pombal. And with them linked the demographic factor that, although it is not able to explain the linguistic problems, serve as indicators to interpret "the linguistic processes occurred in Brazil". (MATTOS e SILVA, 2004. p. 59). The Brazilian educational system has undergone several changes over the centuries. But it is in the nineteenth century, that several decrees and laws aimed at education. Also, there were several teaching methods. Some of these methods arose in Europe, among them the Lencasterian Method, or Method of Mutual Teaching, in the early nineteenth century, and soon spread to other parts, including the Brazilian provinces. The Method of Mutual Teaching is our object of research. We had as general objective to verify how the application of this Method occurred in the province of Bahia in the 19th century. These researches have been developed in libraries, archives etc. and in the Public Archive of the State of Bahia, it was possible to find three packets of documents that present information about the Mutual Teaching. One of them is totally centered in the method. They are, the packs: 3996 - Student maps 1830-1844; 4002 - Elementary school: school buildings; and 4006 - Elementary Teaching Mutual Teaching - Lencastrian Method. This last pack is a compilation, composed of documents referring to the years from
1825 to 1859, in the most varied documentary genres: reports to the president of the province, application for salary, complaint regarding wage arrears, inventories, didactic material requests, and others. The specific objectives of this research are: to identify in the documents packets of the Public Archive of the State of Bahia, in which establishments occurred the application of this method, in century XIX; how many students attending these spaces, and to seek information regarding didactic materials and Portuguese language content taught. Through the surveys, we find schools with expressive popularity and success. As methodological procedures used in the research, these are of the historical research, of qualitative character, since documentary and bibliographical. The results elucidate how the learning of writing occurred in the schools in which the Method of Mutual Teaching was applied in the Province of Bahia in the 19th century.
