RESUMO:

Based on the theoretical bases of Applied Linguistics and in dialogue with the presuppositions of ethnic-racial education, this qualitative ethnographic research proposes to answer the following question: how do the themes related to Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Anglophone cultures and history can be worked on in the English classroom from an intercultural perspective? The research is justified by the certainty that the learning of a foreign language consists in developing not only language skills, but in knowing and interacting with the cultures of the target language. However, when it comes to English language learning, there is a mistaken implicit imperialist idea, which gives the place of protagonist to the historically hegemonic white, US, and British cultures. This obscures the cultural riches of the African diaspora that also characterize this language, as well as strengthening racist, Eurocentric ideologies, to the detriment of African matrix knowledges, compacting with colonialist practices that erase the contributions of African peoples to the construction of the Brazilian nation, locus of research participants. In Brazil, the theme of cultural plurality in the curriculum was included in the National Curricular Parameters in 1998, as a transversal theme, with no mandatory application. However, only in 2003 Law No. 10.639 / 03 amended Law No. 9,394 / 96 of the Guidelines and Bases of Education, determining the compulsory teaching of Afro-Brazilian and African History and Culture in the school curriculum. This determination explains the interests of this research, whose focus is on Basic Education through the teaching of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), since it validates and supports pedagogical practices to combat racism. In order to implement the proposal, nine intercultural classes were developed, which were taught in the middle school of a public school in Praia do Forte, an important tourist center in Bahia. The research results confirm that the participants were positively impacted when interacting with ethnic-racial knowledge, since they began to recognize these knowledge as constituent elements of their identities and cultures of the English language, were able to express their opinions and discuss critically racist ideologies, integrating with their discourses of resistance in the struggle against the myth of racial democracy.
