The present thesis aims to study the processes of conceptualization and categorization of LOVE,
in love letters written in the 19th and 20th centuries. More specifically, the study seeks to: a)
discuss the Theory of Idealized Cognitive Models, Theory of Metaphor and Conceptual
Metonymy, Categorization, Theory of Prototypes and Semantics of Frames and their
contributions to the study of the conceptualization and of the categorization of LOVE; b)
describe and explain the cognitive processes underlying the conceptualization of ROMANTIC
LOVE in texts of the epistolary genre; c) analyze whether the difference of gender / gender of
authorship interferes with the conceptual variation of this type of love; d) verify maintenance,
variations and changes in the way of conceptualizing ROMANTIC LOVE in the becoming of
time; and e) present the frame ROMANTIC LOVE from the study of corpora. It has as theoretical
framework the contributions of Cognitive Linguistics, namely, Theory of Idealized Cognitive
Models, Conceptual Theories of Metaphor and Metonymy, Image Schemas, Frames Semantics
and Prototypes Theory, being the studies based on discussions by authors, as Lakoff and
Johnson (1980, 1999), Lakoff (1987, 1993, 2007), Johnson (1987), Barcelona (2012,
2009[1996]), Peña Cervel (2012), Fillmore (1982), Rosch (1995), Kövecses (1988, 1990, 2000,
2002, 2015), among others. In addition, interdisciplinary dialogues were established with
authors of History (DEL PRIORE, 2008, 2012; ADAMS FILHO, 2017; CARVALHO, 2007),
Neuroscience (FISHER, 2015[2004]; DAMÁSIO, 2012[1994]) and Biologia (REECE, 2015),
besides the contributions of the Lexicografia (HOUAISS, 2011; CUNHA, 2012; AULETE,
2019). The research undertaken that originated this thesis was done through a qualitative
approach of descriptive-interpretative, bibliographic and documentary character, based on the
paradigm of introspection. The corpora were composed of love letters written in the nineteenth
and twentieth centuries, constituted by the Fractal Theory and the Saturation Technique. The
results were organized from the identified domains of experience and reveal, through the
accessed epistolary documents, that there are different ways to conceptualize LOVE through
metaphorical, metonymic and imago-schematic cognitive models. The realms identified in the
letters investigated comprise the frame ROMANTIC LOVE, since all domains are found in a
great relation of proximity, there being no radical break in the conceptual system of LOVE, but
an interrelationship of concepts according to the proposal of frame presented by Fillmore
(1982). Furthermore, we do not observe conceptual change, over time, nor in relation to the
genre of the scribes, occuring variations and conceptual maintenance of ROMANTIC LOVE.
