RESUMO:

The pedagogical action of English language teachers constitutes itself as an essential component for the understanding of their formative process and, above all, of something we have dubbed Englishing, that is, the manifestation of both the teaching action and the linguistic uses undertaken in the language being taught. Thus, it is of utmost importance to establish a comprehension on the linguistic practices voiced by the English teachers along their enunciative production, phenomenon which requires an in-depth understanding in the teaching and learning of English in today’s world. By this means, the present doctoral research presents a manifest connection to the studies related to both subversion, accommodation and resistance in the use and teaching of English (CLEMENTE; HIGGINS, 2008; CANAGARAJAH, 2008) as well as the notions of agency, performativity and identity (re)construction (AUSTIN, 1955; BHAT, 2005; BUTLER, 1997). Therefore, with the aim of answering the research guiding questions, we resorted to three generation data tools (questionnaire-narrative, interview and enunciative excerpts), as well as field notes and the teacher’s undergraduation curriculum.The obtained answers show important implications to the way we comprehend not only the teaching of a foreign language, but teacher’s metalanguage itself in the midst of their verbal actions. Thus, these results urge to a formative attitude that instills in the pedagolinguistic actions an intercultural and critical consciousness within the reach of the language taught/learned.
