SUMMARY:

This work entitled Syncope in proparoxytones in popular Portuguese in the state of Bahia: sociolinguistic analysis aims to analyze syncope, which is a phonetic-phonological process that occurs in proparoxytone words. This phenomenon is a process that involves a change in syllabic structure, where one or more phonemes are deleted in the posttonic syllable, transforming proparoxytone words into paroxytone ones, such as xícara > xicra, útero > utro, óculos > oclus, abóbora>abobra, between others. This object of study is observed in popular, rural, and spontaneous speech, as evidenced in the works of Amaral (1999), Chaves (2011), and others, highlighting the influence of certain social factors in the application of the process, such as education, social class, and age group. The corpus used in this work is part of the Vertentes do Português Project in the State of Bahia, coordinated by professors Dante Lucchesi (UFF) and Gredson dos Santos (UFBA). The analyzed communities are: i) Afro-Brazilian, composed of Cinzento, Helvécia, Rio de Contas, and Sapé; ii) locations in the interior of Bahia – Poções (rural and urban zones) and Santo Antônio de Jesus (rural and urban zones); and iii) neighborhoods in the capital Salvador, including Cajazeiras, Itapuã, Liberdade, and Plataforma. There were 12 interviews from each community, totaling 144 meticulously examined surveys. In this process, 3,786 data points were found and underwent statistical analysis using the R software, showing a 15.2% of syncope application in proparoxytones and 84.8% of non-application. The variables analyzed in the process were: a) linguistic: contexts preceding and following the posttonic vowel, feature of the posttonic vowel, structure of the stressed syllable, grammatical class, word length and lexical item; b) social: community, gender, education, age group and time spent outside the community. The informant/participant group was also analyzed. In view of this, it is worth highlighting that the research followed the assumptions of Variationist Sociolinguistics, proposed by Labov (1966), and the Theory of Metric Phonology, with the metric analysis of accent, following the proposal of Hayes (1995), and the Metric Theory of Syllable, with emphasis on Selkirk’s proposal (1982).
