SUMMARY:

The terminology of fashion is a wide field of study that is interspersed by a number of other subject areas. In the beginning of the 20th century, France was the main reference in the art of dressing, and the fashion press was the one responsible for spreading trends. Publications such as Le Petit Écho de la Mode, Femina, Les Modes, La Femme de France and Le Figaro-Modes hold in their pages a valuable record of what was regarded as beautiful and suitable clothing, as well as the techniques and materials used in their making. Considering the existence of fashion columns in such magazines, this dissertation had the objective of developing a glossary of French fashion terms used in the time period from 1903 to 1930 by taking into account linguistic features of the selected lexical items and the social, cultural, economic and political transformations that took place during La Belle Époque (1900-1914), World War I (1914-1918) and the Roaring Twenties (1919-1929). In order to reach the set goal, this dissertation had both Terminology and Historical Linguistics as a theoretical-methodological basis. Also, the theory of lexical fields developed by Eugenio Coseriu integrates the theoretical framework. In total, 544 terms were cataloged and divided into 7 terminological fields. After analysis, it was possible to identify the occurrence of linguistic loaning and phenomena such as synonymy, polysemy and metonymy, which confirms Finatto and Krieger’s (2004) and Maria Teresa Cabré’s (1995) claims about terms not being separate from everyday language. In that sense, I believe this research may contribute to the studies of terms once used in the past and also to the history of fashion and that of the French language.
