From the perspective of philological studies, the objective is to describe some of the characteristics that culminated in the construction of the image of the adulterous woman, especially those who were reclusive in Portuguese America, as well as to discuss aspects related to the lexicon present in documents dating from the 18th century and early of the XIX. The study was carried out through philological criticism applied to 05 colonial manuscripts, through which it sought to expand knowledge of the cultural practices of the time, mapping requests to imprison wives, due to adultery, which were made through requests, petitions, official letters and letters sent to the Metropolis, explaining the reasons for the requests. The analyzed documents belong to the Overseas Historical Archive, which were cataloged and made available online by the Projeto Resgate Barão do Rio Branco, at the National Digital Library. In the transdisciplinary study, theoretical-methodological assumptions were used referring to the female context in colonial Bahia (ALGRANTI, 1993; PRIORE, 1994), document editing (SPINA, 1977; CAMBRAIA, 2005), cultural history (CHARTIER, 2002), and lexicography (BIDERMAN, 1994; BARBOSA,1990; MURAKAWA, 2011), among others. The reading, interpretation and development of semi-diplomatic editing that guided the corpus analysis, made possible a systematic observation of characteristics of the lexicon that builds the image of women, as recorded in the documents, and which will be expressed through a glossary, in order to reach to elaborate a description of the profile of the women collected on charges of adultery. It is believed that the proposed discussion can contribute to expanding knowledge about the language and cultural practices of the period.
