SUMMARY:

This thesis aims to investigate the foundations of the constitution and institutionalization of Dialectology and Linguistic geography in Brazil, starting from decree 30.643, dated March 1952, which established a Philology Commission and initiated studies for the construction of a linguistic atlas within the context of Casa de Rui Barbosa. This endeavor involves mapping out knowledge and practices. The goal is to identify and discuss the scientific and political effects of this regulation on linguistic research; describe and interpret circumstances that facilitated a program of investigation and data collection gaining state attention; and characterize the scientific community dedicated to dialectological study, considering continuities and discontinuities in the formation and implementation of a research agenda. In this perspective, the theoretical and methodological assumptions of the history of sciences and linguistic historiography are adopted. The chosen periodization spans from 1952 to 1986, which is traditionally recognized as the third phase of dialectal studies, utilizing records of activities related to Casa de Rui Barbosa in the realm of Dialectology, as well as journalistic texts, decrees, publications in scientific journals, and manuals. As results, eight activities were identified, of which four are historically narrated as scientific reverberations of the decree: the Dialectology course and the Linguistic geography exhibition organized by Sever Pop in 1954; the conference and publication of the Phonetics Laboratory in Bahia (1958, 1961) by Nelson Rossi.
