RESUMO:
This research studied the syntax and semantics of the Determiner Phrase (DP) in a speech corpus of elder female Brazilian Afro-descendants who lived in the isolated rural community of Helvécia, Bahia, Brazil. The research aimed to provide a description of the definiteness and referentiality marking of DPs in subject position of the sentence using the data available in the corpus to achieve this goal. This information was examined in the perspective of the irregular linguistic transmission process which influenced the formation of popular Portuguese in Brazil. Besides, we intended to understand the variation in the usage of nouns with and without phonetically overt determiners. In addition, in order to delineate an analogy between the process of formation of the Brazilian Portuguese and the process of formation of Creole languages, the work provides a comparison between the results found in the corpus described and the results of similar works on some Creole languages, such as those spoken in São Tomé (ALEXANDRE, HAGEMEIJER, 2007), Cape Verde (BAPTISTA, 2007) and Guiné-Bissau (KIHM, 2012). It was also relevant to make a correlation of our results and other studies that focus on Afro-Brazilian Portuguese variety and who also lived in isolated communities (RIBEIRO, 2010). Thus, we described the syntactic-semantic contexts in which the speakers realize articles (defined or indefinite) in DPs in the syntactic subject position and compared them with other research results. Finally, a syntactic structure is proposed for the DP of this Brazilian Portuguese variety, which is coherent with the assumption of the existence of phonetically overt definite article in Brazilian Portuguese grammar and with the syntactic-semantic contexts described in the dissertation.
