SUMMARY:

With the expansion of Translation Studies, various modalities emerge as a result of technological advances, the evolution of communication practices, and, consequently, cultural exchanges. An example is scanlation, a fan practice in which manga is scanned, translated and edited, and then made available online for other fans. This study aims to investigate and comment on the translation strategies employed in the translation of excerpts from the manga Hanyou no Yashahime, by Takashi Shiina and Rumiko Takahashi, carried out by the researcher of this work, a member of the scanlation and fansub group InuYasha Downs. The translation context presents challenges posed by the indirect translation of two scans translated into English and Spanish. To support this investigation, the theoretical framework of Functional Translation Theory was employed, mainly drawing on the contributions of Christiane Nord (2016) for a more panoramic textual analysis and understanding of scope, as well as the translation strategies of the pragmatic axis presented by Andrew Chesterman (2022), alongside other names in Translation Studies, with a focus on Amateur Translation (ARAGÃO, 2016; FERRER SIMÓ, 2005; and LEITÃO, 2020). The dissertation proposes the following organization, with Chapters 1, 2, and 5 ready for qualification: a) Chapter 1 – First Steps, containing an introduction, justification, objectives, and qualification organization; b) Chapter 2 – The Origin and Internationalization of Manga, providing a historical overview and updates on this type of comics; c) Chapter 3 – The Fan as Translator, exploring the practice of scanlation; d) Chapter 4 – Theoretical Aspects of Translation, working with the translation theories chosen for this research: German functionalism, pragmatic translation strategies, and reflections on indirect translation; e) Chapter 5 – Research Methodology, which details the methodological procedures for the research, as well as its placement in the field of Translation Studies; f) Chapter 6 – Hanyou no Yashahime: Work, Translation, and Analysis, presenting the translation analysis and information about the selected corpus; g) Chapter 7 – Unveiling the Results, which will engage in a discussion about the analysis, and finally; Chapter 8 – Final Considerations. Ultimately, this work seeks to bring attention to research on scanlation and other non-conventional forms of translation that are already popular but invisible in the academic sphere, as well as contributing to the study of strategies applicable to this specific field.
