SUMMARY:

This study aims to understand feminist conceptualizations in internet memes, investigating the
metaphorical and metonymic models that underpin these constructions of meaning. The

research is based on the theoretical assumptions of Cognitive Linguistics (IBARRETXE-
ANTUÑANO; VALENZUELA, 2012; SILVA, 1997; LAKOFF; JOHNSON (2002 [1980)]),

specifically, on Socio-historical-cultural Cognitive Semantics (ALMEIDA , 2019;
SANTANA, 2019). It is based on the Theory of Conceptual Metaphor and Metonymy
(LAKOFF; JOHNSON, 2002 [1980]) and on some of its developments (KÖVECSES 2002;
RADDEN; KÖVECSES, 2007; SORIANO, 2012; PAIVA, 2016), on the Theory of Models
Cognitive Concepts (LAKOFF, 1987) and the Theory of Metaphor and Multimodal
Metonymy (FORCEVILLE, 2008, 2009, 2016). With regard to internet memes, it is based on
Shifman (2014), Chagas (2020) and Recuero (2006). Concerning the methodology, a
qualitative, exploratory, interdisciplinary and descriptive-interpretive study was carried out,
considering the epistemological bases of Cognitive Linguistics, of an empiricist and
phenomenological nature, and based on the ecological proposal of Almeida (2018), based on a
systemic conception of Science, in interrelation with the principles of Complexity Theory
(MORIN, 2003, 2015) and in particular the Theory of Fractals. (CAPRA; LUISI, 2014). The
corpus of the research consisted of thirteen internet memes, which were collected from the
Facebook page Editora Humanas, chosen based on the criteria of influence of the content on
the internet, number of likes, interaction with followers and movement. The Theoretical
Saturation Technique proposed within the scope of Socio-historical-cultural Cognitive
Semantics by Almeida and Santana (2019) and applied by Santana (2019) was also used to
perform the corpus clipping. In short, with the research carried out, it was inferred the
relevance of the metonymic model in the conceptualization of feminists, in particular, in the
formation of the prototypical ICM of these women, since this cognitive mechanism proved to
be the main trainer of the stereotyped constructions of meaning that were found in the
analyzed memes. In turn, the metaphors were on the margins of the feminist conceptualization
process, because, as the study of the corpus demonstrated, few were inferred, and those that
were found related to subjects other than the domain in focus. Finally, in the research, there
was a predominance of constructions of meaning alluding to the prototypical feminist MCI,
which reduces all feminists to a single stereotype, without considering the plurality of this
group.
