LANGUAGE ATTRITION IN THE VOWEL PRODUCTION OF BILINGUAL BRAZILIAN IMMIGRANTS (PORTUGUESE-ENGLISH) RESIDENTS IN LONDON
Language Attrition; Complex Dynamic Systems Theory; Bilingualism; Acoustic Phonetics.
This project proposes an investigation in the field of Language Acquisition studies, anchored by the Complex Dynamic Systems Theory. The target phenomenon of this investigation is Language Attrition, a process resulting from the interaction between two language systems, emerging in bilingualism and immigration contexts. Thus, we seek to explore the database collected by Kupske (2016) regarding the vowel production of Brazilian immigrants, bilingual in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and English, residing in London. To do so, we will perform an acoustic analysis of the database, investigating the values of F1, F2 and duration of vowels /ɔ/ and /u, uː/ in two control groups (BP and English), in order to validate the findings. Lastly, we will analyze the vowel productions of the experimental group of immigrants. We expect to find an altered production of BP by immigrants, with values closer to those found in native English speakers due to greater exposure and contact with the English language system, if compared to Brazilian Portuguese.
