SUMMARY:

This thesis investigates the nominalizations with –ção and –mento (estruturação/alongamento) in Brazilian Portuguese (BP). Based on a descriptive study of this phenomenon, I analyze the different readings found in these words and their implications regarding the internal structure of nouns with these suffixes. According to specialized literature (BASÍLIO, 1980; ROCHA, 1999), they are considered concurrent morphemes, that is to say they can be inserted in the same context for the existence of double forms (SANTOS, 2006; SILVEIRA, 2014; FREITAS, 2015; REIS, 2016). ) with –ção and –mento (englobação/englobamento). In BP we observe that the nominalizations with the suffixes –ção and –mento attached to verbs allow the following readings: i) event (simple and iterative); ii) result (GRIMSHAW, 1990; PICALLO, 1997; ALEXIADOU, 2009; HARLEY, 2009) and iii) entity (singularized, place and collective) (BRITO; OLIVEIRA, 1997; REIS, 2016). To investigate the hypothesis that the readings identified in the nominalizations with –ção and –mento are related to the different phases (MARANTZ, 1997) they go through during their derivation, I adopted the theoretical model of Distributed Morphology (HALLE; MARANTZ, 1993). , 1994; MARANTZ, 1997; SIDDIQI, 2009). Also, I chose to study the Aspect in languages (VENDLER, 1967; VERKUYL, 1972, 1999; COMRIE, 1976; DOWTY, 1979; SMITH, 1997; CROFT, 2012) to investigate the hypothesis that the features of the Lexical Aspect (dynamicity, duration, and telicity) and Grammatical Aspect (perfective and imperfective) are related to the different readings found in words with -ção e -mento. This work is justified by the originality of the hypotheses, mainly when it applies the notions of Lexical and Grammatical Aspects in the scope of the studies on nominalizations with –ção and –mento. Although there has been several studies on those nominalizatons, none of them associates the readings expressed by the words with –ção and –mento to the functional features of Lexical and Grammatical Aspect as primitives selected in List 1 and bound in the projections of Lexical Aspect (AspectlP) and Grammatical (AspectgP), universal features of human languages, found even in the process of language acquisition (WEXLER, 1998; HERMONT; MORATO, 2014; LESSA, 2016; CASTRO; HERMONT, 2017). Regarding methodological aspects, the present work used the data in my dissertation (REIS, 2016), and some data was found on electronic sites, specifically on PB blogs. This investigation allowed us to find evidences of the presence of Lexical and Grammatical Aspect features in the nominalizations with -ção e -mento, validating the hypothesis that it is the aspectual features that determine the different readings of the nominalizations with -ção and -mento, and also that the layers in the derivation are important for determining the interpretations of the nouns in –ção and –mento in BP.
