SUMMARY:

This thesis, entitled The piassava art: a lexical-ethnographic study of handicrafts on the North Coast of Bahia, is composed of two volumes and presents a lexical-ethnographic study of the vocabulary of specialty of piassava straw handicrafts in the communities of Porto de Sauípe, Canoas and Vila Sauípe, Bahia-Brazil. Its objective is to register and inventory part of the lexicon related to artisanal activity in the region, focusing, above all, on the relationship between the lexicon and material culture. In the first volume, the theoretical and methodological discussions which were the basis for the stages of collection, treatment and analysis of ethnographic linguistic data are presented. The second volume is intended to present the visual glossary The piassava art: an ethnographic lexical visual glossary, composed of a nomenclature that brings together 199 entries and 89 images that seek to portray, in their microstructure, through linguistic and visual definitions, the real context in which the ethnoremic units located in the corpus are applied. In order to do it, the research was based on the theoretical-methodological assumptions of Ethnolinguistics, starting from in loco observations in Porto de Sauípe, Canoas and Vila Sauípe, through contact with the artisans in their work routines. The corpus was constituted from the application of an interviews script, containing questions that address the different techniques involved in the artisanal production process, as well as aspects related to the characterization of the workers, the genealogy of the activity and the work relationships. The results obtained allow us to infer that the changes made to the activity structure point to a gradual suppression of linguistic units characteristics in the lexical norm of this traditional group, which justifies the urgency of registering this estate  in order to safeguard some of the culture and the history of the basketry and braided in piassava straw tradition.
