Meat consumption is of fundamental importance for a healthy diet. However, some products have a high sodium content, which can result in health problems in excessive consumption. In order to investigate the panorama of sodium content in meat products, a survey of nutritional information regarding sodium content was carried out on websites of industries in Brazil that sell this food. 1600 products were listed in 20 products and classified as high, medium and low in sodium according to global and national parameters. jerked beef, charque and salted product had the highest salt content values of 5.48, 5.21 and 2.58 g/100 g. The lowest values were found for pâté, quibe, seasoned meat, hamburger, meat-ball and breaded, which ranged from 0.77, 0.66, 0.65, 0.65, 0.60 to 0.54 g/100 g respectively. Ranking for sodium content 1527 (95.44%) products were in the high and medium ranking and 73 products were in the low ranking (4.56%). Expressive values were found with high and medium levels of sodium. Regarding the claim in reduced sodium, there are still few products about (2.18%) of the analyzed products (n=35) had a reduced sodium claim and of these products only 12 were actually reduced in sodium. In view of the above, it is necessary to reformulate meat products and greater attention from health agencies, aiming at healthier products, in addition, while there is still no reduction in sodium in meat products, moderate consumption is advised.
