The occurrence of aflatoxins (B1, B2, G1 and G2) was investigated in 60 samples of beer from the main brands, with and without adjunct, produced in Brazil. An analytical method was standardized and validated by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection. Extraction was performed using immunoaffinity columns after degassing the samples in an ultrasound bath. The limit of quantification (LOQ) ranged from 10 to 30 ng.L^-1 and the mean recovery was 88.5%, 98.0%, 98.3%, 110.1% for AFB1, AFB2, AFG1 and AFG2, respectively. Beer samples without adjunct had higher levels of AFB2 (p=0.003) and a higher number of samples with simultaneous occurrence of aflatoxins, when compared to samples with adjunct. AFB2 had a higher incidence in the samples, with medians of 27.0 and 40.4 ng.L^-1 for the group of beers with and without adjunct, respectively. The median levels of AFB1, AFG2 and AFG1 were below the LOQ (2.5 to 7.5 ng.L^-1). Of the 60 samples analyzed, 88.3% showed occurrence of at least one of the aflatoxins and the medians of total aflatoxin contents (AFT) and AFB1 in the positive samples were 40.9 and 16 ng.L^-1, respectively. The characterization of the carcinogenic risk for exposure to AFB2 and AFT was performed by estimating the margin of exposure (MOE). The high consumption of beer can represent a risk of exposure to the carcinogenic effects of aflatoxins, being surprisingly more accentuated for the consumption of beers without adjunct produced in Brazil, the famous pure malt beers.
