SUMMARY:

The oils derived from hybrid plants result from crossing different plant species or varieties. This review focused on oils extracted from hybrid plants and analyzed their patent documents and scientific articles. Data were collected from the Espacenet® and Scopus databases. Out of 178 patent documents and 234 identified articles, only 24 and 187 met the inclusion criteria, respectively. Key stakeholders, trends, and future directions were identified, including intellectual property protection, sustainable practices, genetic diversity, and international collaboration. Agricultural and Biological Sciences were the primary application areas for patents (79.2%) and articles (49.3%). Brassica ssp. was extensively researched in both patent documents and scientific articles. The first patent document was registered in 1990, while the first article was in 1969. The majority of patents were filed via WO (45%), followed by the United States (30%) and Canada (20%). Over 60% of scientific article authors had between 2 and 5 publications. The results indicated a growing trend of patenting and publishing articles in the hybrid oils field, providing insights into potential trends in industrial, technological, and scientific research in the food, pharmaceutical, and biofuel sectors. Future studies may investigate the genetic aspects of hybrid plant varieties, the physicochemical characteristics of hybrid oils, and their application in new products.
