SUMMARY:

This work aimed to prepare and characterize polymeric films produced from blends of PBS and PBAT that have exceeded their expiration date, using the extrusion technique. Five polymer blends were prepared, extruded and successfully characterized using FTIR-ATR, XRD and SEM techniques, mechanical tests and water vapor permeability. No spectral bands associated with representative thermal degradations of the blends during the extrusion process were observed in the infrared spectra. The crystallinity indices of the blends ranged from 18.1-21.0%, with the crystalline portion formed by a mixed ordered arrangement between PBS and PBAT chains. Increases in the average crystal sizes (8.76-16.0 nm) were accompanied by an increase in the concentration of PBAT in the blends, evidencing an effect of nucleation and crystal growth. The micrographs of the surfaces of the polymeric films showed defects and roughness accompanied by an increase in the concentration of PBAT in the blends. Changes in mechanical properties and water vapor permeability were correlated with the increase in PBAT in the blend and comparable to results previously reported in the literature. The present study showed the feasibility of reusing a PBAT that has exceeded its expiration date and can be extended to other degradation conditions, adding value to the biopolymer.
