RESUMO:

Cancer is a serious problem of worldwide magnitude and is responsible for deaths worldwide. One of the main treatments for this condition is chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which can be performed alone or in combination. Chemotherapy and radiation is highly cytotoxic to body cells, causing important side effects such as mucositis. These occur in 20% to 40% of patients receiving chemotherapy and / or radiotherapy. Low-power laser therapy appears to be an efficient, viable, painless, and cost-effective method of tissue repair, thus meeting the principles of beneficence and justice bioethics, as the benefit of technology is not restricted to the higher layers only. purchasing power and be made equally and fairly available to the whole community. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of using laser therapy in the treatment of oral mucositis in patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy. A descriptive observational study was carried out, with a temporal cut-out of oncological patients on laser therapy, who attended the Laser Clinic of the FOUFBA Biophotonics Center from 2002 to December 2018, who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and agreed to participate in the study. signing the free and informed consent form. Through a database, 41 individuals and 77 cycles were selected, with information regarding gender, age, profession, medical history and medication use of patients treated from 2002 to 2018, at the Laser Clinic of the Biophotonics Center. from FOUFBA. Diode composite laser was used, λ = 630 nm, power density = 24 mW, dosage = 4.0 J / dot, with application in scanning and additional dosage of 2 joules in lesion. Application occurred in 03 weekly sessions totaling 01 cycle with 12 sessions. The results showed that more than 50% of the sample obtained asymptomatic outcome or improvement, that middle-aged individuals (41-60 years) who were more irradiated with laser were the ones that most benefited from the positive effect of treatment
