SUMMARY:

This research aims on the relationship between management, participation and democracy in the context of a public school in the state education network in Bahia. The study started from the following central question: how can the management of Colégio Estadual Carlos Valadares stimulate the mobilization of the school community in discussions on central themes for territorial development where it is located, particularly in the municipality of Santa Bárbara (BA)? We start from the assumption that democratic school management is a key element for the engagement of students, fathers, mothers, teachers, managers, representatives of social movements and public authorities in the creation of spaces and tools for sharing information and participation. The school was selected as a field of investigation due to its role in society in the face of the (trans)formation caused by the democratic management assumed by the researcher in order to boost the search for collaboration and social participation in management, given the challenges experienced in the field of learning of students who, on a daily basis, interfere in local development with democratic and scientific practice. The research is based on authors such as Lima (2007), Santos (2000), Freire (1996), Milani (2004), Gohn (2013), Fischer (2014), among others. As for the methodological approach, it is an investigation with a qualitative approach of the case study type that describes and analyzes the effects of democratic management actions in the educational context. The investigation included the following procedures: bibliographical research, semistructured interview, document analysis, including minute records, accountability, reports, portfolio, folder, magazine, newspaper, digital media and iconographic records, maps, projects and plans of actions. The research results reveal the relevance of democratic management in transforming life projects in the school community. Management sought to guide its actions taking as a reference the implementation of interdisciplinary local intervention projects to improve everyone's quality of life. It was possible to identify how democratic management at CEPCV favored collective community engagement and the production of local development initiatives in the municipality of Santa Bárbara (BA). Although some contradictions were observed during the research process, regarding the interference of municipal and state management policies that sometimes conflict with the interests of the investigated school itself, the results showed positive changes throughout the school community.
