SUMMARY:

The thought of Theodor W. Adorno is an important source for understanding the limits, use, and possibilities of critical reason, as opposed to instrumental reason. This dissertation analyzes the concept of Cultural Industry in the philosophical thought of Theodor W. Adorno, mainly regarding its role as the ideological foundation of industrial society. The thesis of this dissertation is that the Cultural Industry is established as a mechanism for the instrumentalization of reason, without which humanity would not have been objectified as in late capitalism. Regarding methodology, this research is characterized as bibliographic, based on the analysis of relevant works on the subject. The study showed that, within the Enlightenment project, Adorno directs his criticisms at Culture and the Culture Industry with the conviction of establishing critical reason in opposition to the dominant instrumental reason. The pressure to conformity described by Adorno is absorbed by the Culture Industry, in the shadow of commodity fetishism. It was found that this process has a repressive character that leads to self-alienation and, consequently, to the production of uncritical individuals. For Adorno, the Culture Industry represents the regression of critical reason, and entertainment is configured as the stagnation of all emancipatory potential. His legacy lies in the encouragement of emancipation through autonomous reflection, rejecting barbarism as a finished reality and proposing a truly emancipated society, where critical reason is the guide of human existence.
