SUMMARY:

This dissertation examines Walter Benjamin’s concept of the loss of aura as an aesthetic and cultural phenomenon resulting from the technological reproducibility of the artwork. Taking the essay The Work of Art in the Age of Its Technological Reproducibility (1935–1939) as its central axis, the study analyses how technical processes of production and reproduction transform aesthetic experience and become historically consolidated in modernity. The argument then moves back to Benjamin’s reflections on the urban experience of the masses and metropolitan shock, before returning to the context of the historical avant-gardes and photography, where the destruction of aura gives rise to new perceptual and creative regimes. In cinema, the phenomenon reaches its most radical expression: technique ceases to serve cult value and assumes an emancipatory function, instituting a tactile and collective mode of perception. By distinguishing a first, ritualistic technique from a second, liberating technique, Benjamin outlines the possibility of a politicised art capable of training human senses to meet the demands of modern life.
