SUMMARY:

Cognitivism is a research program that takes the comparison of the mind to a
computer seriously. This program is based on the idea of mental representations and
computations on representations to explain how cognitive processes can occur. Post-
Cognitivism is a proposed research program that arises in contrast to Cognitivism and
consists primarily of two independent lines of research, namely enactivism and ecological
psychology. These lines of research share a common core commitment to define the nature of
cognition, emphasizing the role of the body in cognitive processes, the role of the
environment in which the organism develops its cognitive abilities, and the non-
representational character of cognition. A criticism often leveled at post-cognitivist
approaches is how they can explain cognitive performances considered “representation-
hungry”, such as imagining, planning, calculating, inferring, and also the use of language. In
this sense, this research presents two enactivist theories, Radical Enactivism and Ecological
Enactivism, and how each of them propose a theory of language. The present research aims
to explore a solution to the explanatory integration challenge (i.e., the separation or not of
cognitive performances between higher and lower levels) in order to establish a possible
reconciliation between Radical Enactivism and Ecological Enactivism.
