SUMMARY:

This thesis aims to propose the teaching of the discipline "Popular Cultures" for the Theater
Technical Course of the State Center for Professional Education Isaías Alves (ICEIA) in the
State Education Network in the city of Salvador, Bahia in a perspective of curricular change
for the aforementioned course. It traces a historical-social-educational panorama about Art-
Education today, bringing reflections on the historical course of the teaching of Arts in the
Brazilian educational context, from colonization to the present day. Going through studies,
ideas, researchers, theorists, art educators, current trends in theater-education, the training of
Arts teachers, the proposals and updates of the National Curricular Parameters (PCN'S), of
the Law of Directives and Bases of National Education (LDBEN) to the new Information and
Communication Technologies (ICTs) thus enabling the understanding of the current reality. It
is also about the teaching of Theater and Popular Cultures in the State Education Network,
analyzing the often challenging experiences faced by teachers. It also brings explanations
about the curriculum of other professional courses offered by the ICEIA College, including
the Technical Theater Course and how its internal structure is given as the curricular
internship of that course. In addition, it analyzes concepts of Culture, Popular Culture, Mass
Culture, Elite Culture, Folklore and Cultural Identity and how these concepts can bring
significant contributions to students, to the school and to the proposal of the discipline
"Popular Cultures". Through the themes “Multiculturality”/”Interculturality” it enables
analyzes from the point of view of contemporary authors and researchers, on their common
concepts and characteristics in the search for an egalitarian and inclusive education. As a
central theme and object of analysis and debates, the “Theatrical and Pedagogical Curriculum
Proposal” on the subject “Popular Cultures” presents as a feasible suggestion a Teaching Plan
aimed at popular education. Finally, the thesis describes the practical and pedagogical
experience of the students that culminated in the scenic show which was all held and worked
in a virtual way, bringing to the center of the discussions a new teaching model of Theater,
during the COVID 19 pandemic. The objective was to work with Popular Cultures, providing
students with theoretical and practical experiments and affirming the importance and cultural,
artistic and theatrical contribution of a discipline of this nature that deals with Popular
Cultures for the ICEIA Theater Technical Course and also for the school environment.
