This research seeks to understand the socio-historical conditions under which the Paraíba-born artists Cátia de França and Elba Ramalho pursued entry into the Brazilian phonographic market and the construction of success within this cultural sphere. Originating from a similar context in Paraíba, both artists, through migration, sought to assert their desires and dreams of building successful artistic and professional paths. They did so in a phonographic market permeated by racial, gender-based and regional inequalities. Their differences, as well as the ways in which each related to the artistic field, may explain why they achieved such distinct outcomes in their careers, even though thay shared points of intersection highlighted by the research. By focusing on the phonographic market, this study examines the period from 1979, the year of both artists’ recording debuts, to 1985, aiming to understand the disputes they faced in order to remain in the industry and build success and stability in an environment marked by competition and inequality. Thus, though the comparison of hemerographic and discographic sources, the trajectories og Cátia de França e Elba Ramalho will be reconstructed, from their births in Paraíba to their entry into the phonographic market in Rio de Janeiro. The theoretical framework of this research draws on key authors in the fields of Social History and Popular Music, as well as theorists from Cutural Studies, Feminist Studies and ethnic-racial relations.

This dissertation analyzes the editorial stance of the influential Bahian newspaper A Tarde between the immediate aftermath of the 1964 coup and the promulgation of Institutional Act No. 5 in 1968, through an analysis of its editorials, seeking to understand the transformations in its discourse in the context of the consolidation of the civil-military dictatorship. To this end, it examines the newspaper’s editorial positioning during the period extending from the post-coup moment of 1964 to the 1965 state elections, identifying how the periodical interpreted the new regime and expressed expectations regarding the restoration of democratic normalcy. It then analyzes A Tarde’s reaction to the authoritarian measures implemented between 1965 and 1966, especially in response to Institutional Act No. 2, the 1967 Constitution, and the Press Law, highlighting signs of discontent and opposition to the hardening of the regime and to the Castello Branco government. Finally, the dissertation investigates the newspaper’s discourse during the Costa e Silva administration (1967–1968), observing its interpretations of the new president, social mobilizations—particularly the student movement—and the ways in which the periodical reacted to the intensification of repression and the political closure that culminated in Institutional Act No. 5.

This master's thesis aims to present the results of the research project ‘Professional denialism: far-right governmentality,’ developed in the Graduate Programme in History at the Federal University of Bahia, linked to the line of research ‘Society, Power Relations and Region.’ First, the phenomenon of denialism is analysed based on the theoretical discussion of forms of denial (literal, interpretative and implicatory), typologies proposed by Stanley Cohen, and the understanding of historical denialism as a mechanism of power that articulates discursive, institutional and symbolic practices, demonstrating that denialism is not just a revisionist narrative about the past, but is part of a far-right political project that rewrites history to legitimise authoritarian forms of power in the present.
Next, the case of Siegfried Ellwanger and Editora Revisão is taken as a paradigmatic example of this denialist governmentality in Brazil, examining the publisher's catalogue, the reissues of integralist and anti-Semitic works, and connections between former military personnel from the dictatorship and transnational far-right networks, to show that professional denialism operated in the country as the ideological core of a network that sought to rehabilitate authoritarian experiences through the systematic falsification of history.
The following chapter examines Ellwanger's journey through the justice system, highlighting the complaint filed by the Popular Anti-Racist Movement (MOPAR) and the Habeas Corpus trial in the Federal Supreme Court, when the ministers discussed what constituted racism and what constituted history and, while denying the HC request, ended up establishing criteria for historiographical validation that impacted the public circulation of denialist discourse.
Thus, despite being convicted by the highest court in the country, Ellwanger managed to consolidate his narrative in the mainstream media, publishing an opinion piece in Folha de São Paulo in which he presented himself as a victim of political and intellectual persecution, in addition to being presented as a ‘historian and editor.’ Finally, based on the work of Valeria Thus and critical criminology, the dissertation concludes that professional denialism should be understood as a structured practice of power that acts to maintain racial hierarchies and naturalise violence, constituting a central element of far-right governmentality.

This work aims to analyze the political discourses produced by the Assembleia de Deus in Brazil, drawing primarily on material published by the newspaper Mensageiro da Paz between 2016 and 2022. This period marks, in Brazilian political history, the strengthening of figures and parties aligned to the right that articulate two rationalities: one of an economic and political order, characterized by the advancement of market ideology across all spheres of social life; and another linked to a Judeo-Christian moral agenda that defends forms and customs associated with an ideal of Western society. Questions related to collaboration with institutional politics, the determination of Assembleia conservatism, and the analysis of its political project regarding gender guide the structural points of this research. Thus, the purpose of this study is to demonstrate how the leadership of Brazil's largest evangelical institution articulated political and religious elements in the construction of its symbolic universe, as evidenced through its official communication vehicles.

This study addresses the armed conflict between two backlands families in Alagoas. For just over twenty years, the Félix and Novaes families engaged in both direct and indirect disputes, driven by revenge, honor, and the interests of other groups. The work seeks to demonstrate the conditions that generated this conflict and, above all, what enabled its persistence. As a contextual framework, we examine the characteristics of the formation of Republican Alagoas, as well as the support this model provided to large landed estates. This study draws on journalistic sources, a specialized literature review, and interviews. From this context, Alagoas strengthened a political model that associated economic power with the management of violence through extermination groups.

Driven by greed, Queen Medb of Connatch called upon the armies of Leinster, Munster, and Connacht to steal the Ulster’s magical bull, Donn Cuailnge. This incursion was stopped by a single warrior, Cú Chulainn, because the men of Ulster were sick and couldn't fight. This is the Irish epic narrative of Táin Bó Cuailnge, which dates back to the Irish Iron Age. The book is a compilation of narratives of the 8th and 9th centuries. For this work, we will use two narrative versions: Lebor na hUidre, from the beginning of the 12th century, and The Book of Leinster, written around 1160. This dissertation aims to investigate the representations of gender in Táin Bó Cuailnge, based on gender concepts and masculinity studies. As the historian Joan W. Scott states, gender is "a constitutive element of social relationships based on perceived differences between the sexes, and a primary way of signifying relationships of power". Thus, understanding that gender is configured in social practice, we will examine the relationships from the figures identified as central in the narrative. The main objective is to identify, discuss, and analytically compare gender representations, relationships, and classifications in Táin Bó Cuailnge. Finally, we will trace the notions of masculinities in the documentation, correlating them with the context of production and appropriation.

This study investigates the stage performance and album Gal a Todo Vapor (1971–1972), by Gal Costa, as expressions of political-cultural resistance during the Brazilian civil-military dictatorship, within the framework of the history of the present time. The dissertation analyzes the phonographic album released in 1971 and the two versions of the performance, the first staged in Rio de Janeiro in 1971 and the second reformulated in 1972 and presented in other major cities, considering their aesthetic transformations and shifting meanings. It also outlines the political-cultural context of the 1970s, exploring the relationships between counterculture and expanded notions of resistance, grounded in the history of sensibilities and articulated with the concept of collective representation. The research draws on phonographic, visual, audiovisual, press materials, and censorship records in order to examine how these works produced meaning within a cultural field shaped by mediations such as the recording industry and state control mechanisms. By focusing on how meaning is produced through the interplay of performance, song interpretation, and forms of sociability, the study demonstrates that resistance does not exist outside these mediations, but is instead constituted in tension with them. Finally, it analyzes how these works were progressively reinterpreted in memory, becoming established as landmarks of Brazilian counterculture and resistance to the dictatorship, thus revealing the processes of monumentalization that shape their place in recent history.

This dissertation analyzes the experiences of masculinities among Black and mixed-race workers in Santo Amaro, a city located in the Recôncavo region of Bahia, between 1889 and 1910, a period marked by the transformations of the post-abolition era and the persistence of racism during the First Brazilian Republic. The research is based on the analysis of criminal court records, understood as privileged sources for examining conflicts, values, and everyday practices. The study investigates how men primarily engaged in rural labor and itinerant occupations constructed and contested forms of social recognition and masculine affirmation amid profound social inequalities. It argues that work occupied a central place in the constitution of honor and dignity, functioning as a moral value mobilized in disputes for respect and prestige. The tensions recorded in the legal proceedings reveal that masculinity was constantly negotiated within labor relations, local sociabilities, and affective ties. The dissertation further demonstrates that race structured these experiences, as Black men were excluded from the ideals of civic masculinity promoted by republican elites. Nevertheless, these individuals not only endured such exclusions but also re-signified categories such as “honest worker” and “family man” as strategies of belonging and resistance. By articulating gender, race, and class, this study contributes to a broader understanding of the multiple forms of existence and resistance forged by Black men in the post-abolition period.

The dissertation investigates the question of free labor in nineteenth-century Puerto Rico. Drawing on legislation created to discipline and coerce labor, as well as documentation produced by Spanish colonial authorities and landowners regarding the Reglamento de Jornaleros and the libreta system, the research examines the production of discourses surrounding workers’ social and moral conduct, in addition to complaints about the lack of skilled labor and vagrancy in the streets. As historiography has shown, these were strategies employed by slaveholding elites to undermine workers’ autonomy and reinforce the social and racial hierarchies of slavery within free labor relations. In this sense, the dissertation seeks to understand to what extent the Reglamento and the libretas served the Spanish Empire as tools of control and social marginalization of the free population in Puerto Rico. The research also examines the formation and operation of police forces responsible for the surveillance and control of labor. Through newspapers from the period, especially police and justice sections, it is possible to trace how jornaleros were targeted by these forces and to uncover aspects of their daily lives, living conditions, sociability, and forms of participation in the world of labor. Finally, the dissertation analyzes political debates outlined in the Spanish Cortes during the period in order to identify responses to the crisis of slavery and the projects for the future of labor being proposed for Puerto Rico.

This dissertation addresses the experiences of enslaved workers, free people, freedmen, and slave-owning families between 1876 and 1900, in the process of forming the locality of Souls (Anguera-BA), at the time located in the parish of Bonfim de Feira (current district of Feira de Santana-BA). Within this timeframe, emancipation movements and articulations intensified; confrontations and discussions arose regarding the end of slavery; changes occurred in local and regional economies and wealth after the end of slavery; and the institutional shift in the political regime at the national level. In the last decades of the 19th century, the localities of Souls and Bonfim de Feira were administered militarily, economically, and politically by a few families of slave-owning landowners, who acted translocally in controlling land, positions, people, and decisions. With a profoundly rural character, the two localities presented a polyculture economy, of a slave-based nature, but with a notable presence of free Black people, many of them members of Black families conceived on small and medium-sized farms. Diverse documentation was investigated, including baptismal, death, and marriage records, criminal proceedings, newspapers, inventories, photographs, oral archives, administrative documents, wills, and civil proceedings. The rigorous dialogue between the documents made it possible to reconstruct family ties marked by slavery, translocal experiences of rural work, parental logics of political, economic, and agrarian dominance, as well as survival strategies and the search for freedom that characterized the historical formation of the localities of Souls and Bonfim de Feira.

This dissertation analyzes Raymond Lull's Book of the Order of Chivalry as a discursive intervention aimed at the normative construction of chivalry in the 13th century. Instead of approaching the treatise as a mirror of an already consolidated institution, the study investigates the symbolic mechanisms through which the author seeks to define, legitimize, and discipline the warrior function, articulating theology, social hierarchy, and the regulation of male conduct. It argues that the text operates as a technology for the formation of a hegemonic Christian masculinity, linked to the moralization of aristocratic violence and the affirmation of Christian hegemony in the Iberian Peninsula, as a response to the political, religious, and social tensions of the period.

This dissertation aims to investigate proceedings conducted by the Portuguese Holy Office in the late 16th century, analyzing cases of heretical propositions and blasphemies committed by Old Christians in Atlantic regions such as Bahia, the Atlantic islands, and Angola. The work focuses on analyzing the discourse of defendants accused of valuing marriage over celibacy and defending the lawfulness of simple fornication, themes that challenged post-Tridentine orthodoxy. In this paper, I seek to develop the argument that these statements are not mere doctrinal errors or lapses, but reflections of a heterogeneous cultural environment where ideas circulated through Atlantic traffic. Using a dialogical methodology inspired by Ginzburg, I examine how the category of “rustic” functioned as a defense strategy to mitigate penalties, revealing tensions between scholarly knowledge and everyday experiences. The trials reveal the possibilities for analyzing a disciplinary system in which “ignorance” became a tool for survival and legal negotiation in the Portuguese world. The research also explores gender relations and forms of resistance, demonstrating how inquisitorial denunciation served as a mechanism for mediating conflicts and violence involving relationships between men and women.

This dissertation seeks to understand the historical complexity of female domestic labor in the southwestern region of Bahia by examining how these workers accessed labor courts in the late twentieth century (1974-1989). The study problematizes the ways in which experiences of exploitation in the local labor market were transformed into legal action through the appropriation of judicial instruments provided by the Conciliation and Judgment Board of Vitória da Conquista. Grounded in historical materialism, the analysis articulates the concepts of experience and domestic labor within the Marxist tradition. The documentary corpus consists of 99 labor lawsuits preserved by the Laboratory of Social History of Labor (LHIST/UESB), complemented by personal correspondence, photographs, local newspapers from Vitória da Conquista, and legislative sources. The findings demonstrate that domestic workers pragmatically employed individual litigation to challenge employer arbitrariness, demand recognition of employment relationships, and claim labor rights specific to their category. In doing so, they strategically entered the legal arena to advance their class interests.

This dissertation analyzes the production and circulation of news about the Dutch invasion of Salvador in 1624, and its recapture by the armada organized by Castile and Portugal in 1625, with a focus on news pamphlets (Relações de Sucesso). It investigates how these writings contributed to the construction of discourses about the conflict, highlighting narrative disputes between Portuguese and Castilian agents within the context of the dual monarchy. The research is based on the paleographic analysis of both manuscript and, above all, printed sources, taking into account their forms of production, circulation, and reception, as well as the different audiences they addressed. It starts from the premise that these texts did not intend to report or describe the events in a neutral way, but rather to construct versions of the facts, articulated with political projects and the legitimation of monarchical power. In this specific context, in which Portugal and Castile were part of a dual monarchy sharing a Habsburg monarch as sovereign, and in which Portuguese America was consequently integrated into this structure, narratives and opinions concerning King Philip IV gain particular prominence. Examining these narratives, it is possible to observe that the news pamphlets (Relações de Sucesso) emphasize certain agents and events while ignoring or reinterpreting others, contributing to the consolidation of a constructed memory of the episode. In this sense, these printed texts played a significant role in shaping opinions and in disseminating representations of the war and of government, highlighting the importance of written culture in the political dynamics of the period.

This dissertation investigates the relationship between gender and justice in Archaic Greece through the analysis of Hesiod’s Theogony and Works and Days, as well as Solon’s laws, especially those concerning adultery. The aim is to understand how the notion of justice is formulated in mythical narratives and subsequently institutionalized in the context of the Athenian polis. To this end, this research, situated within the field of Cultural History, also uses gender studies as an analytical tool, considering them as fundamental theoretical and methodological categories for the study of the representations of Themis and Dikē in the Hesiodic corpus, as well as for the critique of the corruption of the king-judges in the archaic legal system. In Solon’s legislation, the context of the staseis, the distribution of land, and the law on adultery are analyzed in order to show how legal norms acted upon citizens and, in particular, upon women. Finally, the study seeks to demonstrate that justice in ancient Greece is closely linked to gender asymmetries and to the social organization of the polis.

The dissertation analyzes the economy and administration of the Portuguese Empire in the second half of the 18th century through the reconstruction of the multi-continental trajectory of Antônio Manuel de Melo de Castro (1739-1795). The study uses the life of this individual as a micro-historical observation scale to highlight the connections between the exercise of royal positions, mercantile practices, and complex interactions with local populations. Born into a Goan elite family in India, Melo de Castro began his career in the State of India as a military officer and Captain of the Sea and War, overseeing commercial sea routes and combating rival Asian powers, such as the Marathas. After becoming involved in internal political conflicts and being reported for disobedience by Governor D. João José de Melo, he was ultimately dismissed and exiled to Angola. During his seven years of exile in Luanda, evidence suggests he quickly integrated into the economic networks of local society, deeply tied to the Atlantic slave trade. Rehabilitated to royal service during the reign of D. Maria I, he resumed his political ascent by being appointed governor of the Sena Rivers and later governor-general of Mozambique in East Africa, engaging in power struggles, establishing alliances, and negotiating the Crown's directives with colonial realities. Finally, the study follows the last years of Melo de Castro in Salvador da Bahia and the insights from the analysis of his post-mortem inventory, which indicate the trading of porcelain, textiles, and ivory objects, as well as the possession of valuable letters of credit that connected agents and capital in Goa, Lisbon, and Portuguese America. In summary, Melo de Castro's trajectory confirms that the governance of the Empire was maintained not only by Crown laws but essentially by complex political, economic, and patronage networks. The work underscores the tenuous boundaries between imperial administration and private mercantile enrichment, demonstrating how governors utilized colonial bureaucracy as a platform to manage intercontinental businesses.

Engaging with the fields of Legal History and gender and power relations, this work analyzes the "Siete Partidas", a legal compilation produced during the reign of Alfonso X of Castile (1252-1284), which represented a quest for centralization of power and renewal of Hispano-Iberian law under the monarchy's monopoly. This work aims to consider how these aspects correlated with the attempt to overcome local noble forces and other social groups, emphasizing how gender and other social markers are appropriated by Alfonsine legislation regarding homicide. Using the methodological approach of discourse analysis, the study will focus on the Seventh Part—the section of the legislation dedicated to crimes and punishments—in order to understand how the legislators of the period employed "gendered" categories in the construction of legal norms relating to homicide.

The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate private revenge in the Pajeú hinterland of Pernambuco, a region in northeastern Brazil, through the repercussions of the case of the “Avenger of Serra Talhada,” Vilmar Alves de Magalhães, or “Vilmar Gaia,” between 1970 and 1979. This case mobilized elements central to the history of the Northeastern sertão, such as cangaço, gunfights, and feuds between families. It was reported by the press of the time, which sought to exploit stereotypes strongly linked to the image of the Northeast—especially the sertão—as a place of violence and vengeful men, reinforcing patterns of masculinity. Thus, our intention is to contribute to the understanding of these issues through the analysis of print journalism reports as well as a documentary aired by Rede Globo de Televisão on the clashes between the so-called “New Lampião” and his enemies. Armed with this material, we aim to understand the trajectory of this individual whose story has been mythologized and who still evokes meanings today regarding the so-called “avenger of the sertão.”

Historiographical narratives reproduce the historical silencing of the Afro-descendant population in the construction of the Brazilian nation and Latin America through content that scarcely explores Black and female trajectories or through degrading discourses that address only the pain and enslavement of the Black population. Therefore, educators face difficulties in bringing an antiracist and feminist history into the classroom. The development of the Apaoká Teaching Method aims to facilitate the connection between the contents of the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC) and the trajectories of Black women who have had a social impact throughout history. In this sense, we problematize the historical erasure produced by the Coloniality of Power and Knowledge in the construction of a history of control, based on epistemicide and whiteness, which negatively influences the construction of the Being in Itself of Afro-descendant women. We discuss how the dispute for power in historiography has contributed to the creation of a national imaginary based on population whitening, while Black movements present a history of resistance against colonization processes, creating the Becoming of the Black Being through collective struggle against the Coloniality of Power and Being. The referred method is theoretically and methodologically grounded in Multiracial and Historical-Critical Pedagogies, Black Feminism, and its analytical tools: intersectionality and outsider within. The dissertation discusses the political exercise of Black women’s trajectories as historical agents engaged in social struggles involving gender, race, and class, enabling connections with students for the development of debates grounded in social critique. As a result, we created a structure divided into three parts of the Apaoká Teaching Method, as well as tables and lesson plans to support classroom practices based on Apaoká. The method developed here is presented as a tool for historical struggle against the coloniality of Power and Knowledge and thus constitutes a small contribution, alongside many other forms of Black resistance, to keeping our history alive.

As noções pessimistas e

This dissertation aims to examine racism legitimized by science through an approach that brings
together the histories of Black and Indigenous peoples, positioning them as central to the racial
debates of the late nineteenth century. Based on an analysis of the work of the white Bahian
physician João Baptista Sá Oliveira, who addresses Black populations in general as well as the
Camacã Indigenous people of southern Bahia, this study highlights analytical possibilities that
consider not only Black people but also Indigenous peoples as racialized groups. The pessimistic
and racialist notions of the period, intertwined with the political and social concerns of white
intellectuals, reveal a complex scenario involving the Camacã, Black populations, and those
classified as “mixed-race”. By examining the representations produced about these groups
throughout the Nineteenth century, this dissertation demonstrates that the process of racialization
was fundamental to the formulation of policies of exclusion and assimilation, embedded within a
broader project of citizenship formation marked by inequality

Dionysianism; Maenads; Ecstatic Dance; Gender in Antiquity.
This dissertation investigates the nature and the socio-political relevance of the Maenads' dance within Dionysianism during Classical Greece (5th and 4th centuries BC). Moving away from traditional historiographical approaches that reduce Maenadism to a mere "safety valve" for female oppression, the research analyzes the Dionysian ritual as a legitimate space for agency, social inclusion, and identity transformation for women. Methodologically, the work crosses literary and philosophical sources (such as Euripides, Aristophanes, and Plato) with material culture, carefully examining the iconography of Attic red-figure vases (lekythoi, pelikai, stamnoi, kylikes, amphorae, and psykteres) and their social uses. The theoretical framework mobilizes Gender Studies, historical anthropology, and the analysis of altered states of consciousness—entheos and mania, alongside the art and movement theories

This thesis seeks to demonstrate, through the analysis of extensive research across different collections and document types, with particular emphasis on police and prison records, how the Brazilian State, in the context of the disintegration of the slave system, criminalized practices and behaviors according to criteria of gender, race, class, and nationality. This study seeks to understand the transformation of women into criminals through the categorization of identities and behaviors, placing them under a permanent state of suspicion, that is, the potential for harm they represent to the functioning of an ordered society. It argues that the woman under suspicion was produced by exclusion, as a result of an insidious policy of criminalization and incarceration with supposedly corrective aims, functioning as a counterpart to the non-inscription of skin color in the constitutional charter as a requirement for the formal exercise of citizenship. Throughout the period studied, it was observed that suspicion began to incorporate criteria beyond race as a basis for criminalization, in a context where the population of color was becoming largely free, thus consolidating itself as an instrument for administering freedom, defining its conditions through the need for correction. In this process, figures such as the disorderly, the disobedient, the fugitive, the drunkard, the offender against public morals, and the alienated became fundamental categories of repression, becoming central characters in the history of Bahia in the second half of the 19th century. The female body, historically viewed with suspicion, then became even more visible, transforming into a privileged object of political, medical, and legal discourses that reiterated the need to control it as a social and moral imperative.

The study of the War of Independence of Bahia (1822–1823) highlights the leading role of Black people, mixed-race people, women, and Indigenous people in the battles, militias, ordinance companies, and troops organized to defend the waters of the Bay of All Saints. These groups, often anonymous and silenced in traditional narratives, acted on the front lines and in the rear, making use of their territorial and strategic knowledge and knowledge of island routes. Figures such as Maria Felipa and José Antônio da Cunha Buticudo stand out, although most remain without direct record. The conflict mobilized diverse social groups with distinct interests—enslaved people seeking freedom, mixed-race people aspiring to citizenship, and merchants defending trade—which spurred collective enlistment. However, despite this military protagonism, the war did not alter racial, social, or gender hierarchies. Thus, the study reinforces the importance of a history "from below," which recognizes the centrality of these subjects in the defense of Bahia and in the construction of the independence process.

The political trajectory of Manoel José de Souza between 1958 and 1992 historically occurred amidst a period of democratization, divergences between political parties, political instability with the military coup, and redemocratization. In sync with this period of more than three decades, Manoel José de Souza, nicknamed Nonô, managed to be elected councilman for Varzedo, then a district of the municipality of Santo Antônio de Jesus, consecutively between 1958 and 1988, while affiliated with political parties (PSD, UDN, ARENA, PDS, PFL, PMDB, and PFL) that had risen to state power. Upon its creation as a municipality in 1989, after an emancipation process that lasted from 1985 to 1989, Varzedo held its first election for mayor and council members in that last year, with Nonô winning the mayoral election and governing the locality until May 17, 1992, the day he was assassinated. Therefore, demarcating the time span from 1958 to 1992 aims to understand the rise, capillarity, and maintenance of his political power based on his connections with political leaders in Varzedo/Santo Antônio de Jesus and Bahia, as well as the capillarity and maintenance of that power over the local population through pragmatic-political actions known as "wall-and-half clientelism," a practice of power exercised through advice, visits to the homes of acquaintances, assistance, and bossism, prospected based on written, oral, and visual documents. The methodology applied will be the confluence of documents simultaneous to trajectory-biographical analyses that will engage in dialogues with investigations of memory, oral history, and images. Furthermore, the theoretical framework will be based on biographical studies, memories, oral history, written records, and images.

The object of study of this thesis is the exploitation of saltpeter and the inland expansion of colonization into the backlands of Bahia throughout the eighteenth century. The central issue lies in understanding the importance and the impacts of the discovery and extraction of this mineral within the broader context of the Portuguese Overseas Empire. Although saltpeter exploitation did not achieve the success expected by its promoters, as commonly noted in historiography, there was an intense movement of business and people driven by its extraction, which initially appeared promising. Thus, the different phases and initiatives developed over approximately five decades were closely linked to the expansion of the Portuguese Empire and the advance of colonization into the interior of Portuguese America. These processes involved complex articulations between the Crown and the conquered territories, mediated by negotiations, disputes, and interests established on both sides of the Atlantic.

This study proposes a cultural history of the expressions of the Christian Nativity in the West, focusing on the continuities and transformations of the enactments of the birth of the Divine Child over the long durée, from the 10th to the 20th century. The research investigates the origins of Nativity representations in Medieval Europe, their development within the context of Early Modern Portugal, and their reinterpretations in contemporary Brazil, especially in the bailes pastoris of the Northeast. Based on the hypothesis that these representations share a lasting symbolic and performative structure rooted in the myth of divine birth, the thesis seeks to demonstrate the existence of underlying patterns, repeated for over a thousand years, that organise these religious, artistic, and festive manifestations. It proposes the construction of an interpretative model named Melodramatic Dialogues of the Nativity, capable of capturing the continuities and ruptures in Nativity performances over time and across distinct historical contexts. The methodology articulates different historical durations the time of events, conjunctures, and long-term structures and is grounded in the theoretical contributions of the history of mentalities and cultural history. The analytical corpus comprises tropes, liturgical dramas, autos pastoris, and cantigas, including texts by Gil Vicente, José de Anchieta, and various bailes pastoris recorded by Brazilian folklorists. The research is also anchored in with traditional communities in Bahia, especially with the Baile Pastoril Queimada da Palhinha, offering the investigation a profound perspective on the processes of preservation, reinterpretation, and transmission of this cultural practice. The study contributes to the understanding of symbolic structures underpinning Western culture and Brazilian popular religiosity.

This thesis proposes an analysis of the life of the Presbyterian Reverend Jaime Wright (1927-1999), through the theoretical-methodological framework of renewed biography, in order to understand his political, religious and social work. The research dialogues with the presuppositions of the New Political History, Cultural History and the History of Religions, seeking to interpret the political and religious culture that underpinned the reverend's pastoral and militant praxis. Jaime Wright graduated in Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary in the United States and began his career as a missionary for the Presbyterian Church in the United States, attached to the New York Board of Foreign Missions. He later became president of the Central Brazil Mission, a presbyterian missionary project operational in numerous Brazilian states, as well became directing of the Ponte Nova Institute (IPN) and taking part in the production of the evangelical film The Dagger (1960), in which he acted as narrator. During Brazil's civil-military dictatorship (1964-1985), he stood out for his militancy in defence of human rights, participating in the founding of or being part of various ecumenical and opposition organizations to the regime, such as the Latin American Council of Churches (CLAI), the Ecumenical Coordination of Services (CESE), the Peace and Justice Service in Latin America (SERPAJ), the Santo Dias Center for Human Rights (CSDDH), the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights for the Countries of the Southern Cone (CLAMOR) and the Brazil: Never Again (BNM) project. These organizations and initiatives played a fundamental role in denouncing the arbitrary actions of the authoritarian regime and in preserving the historical memory of the period. In particular, the Brazil: Never Again project had a major impact on society by systematizing repressive documentation and revealing the scope of the human rights violations promoted by the repressive organs of the authoritarian state.

This doctoral dissertation investigates the healing practices developed in Ancient Egypt between the seventeenth and fifteenth centuries BCE, taking the Edwin Smith Papyrus as its primary source and examining it alongside other medical papyri, archaeological evidence, and both Brazilian and international historiography. The study begins from the observation that Brazilian historical scholarship still presents a significant gap regarding Egyptian therapeutic practices, which are frequently interpreted through a dichotomous framework opposing magic and science or subordinating African medical traditions to the Greco-Roman legacy. Within this context, the research reconstructs the historical development of Kemetic healing practices, highlighting the role of the swnw and the priests of Sekhmet in the production, systematization, circulation, and transmission of therapeutic knowledge. Methodologically, the dissertation is based on documentary, historiographical, and philological analysis of the Edwin Smith Papyrus, incorporating the contributions of James Henry Breasted, James P. Allen, Tanja Pommerening, Michael North, and other contemporary Egyptologists, while also presenting the first complete Portuguese translation of the papyrus, including the forty-eight surgical cases of the Recto and the spells and medical prescriptions preserved on the Verso. The research demonstrates that the manuscript is not merely a surgical treatise but also a pedagogical instrument for the preservation and dissemination of specialized knowledge, revealing a remarkable degree of clinical systematization, empirical observation, and methodological organization. Likewise, it shows that ritual and therapeutic practices functioned as complementary dimensions within the Egyptian healing system, making the traditional opposition between rational medicine and magic historically inadequate. The analysis of the materia medica, surgical procedures, bandaging techniques, prognostic classifications, and textual structure reveals a sophisticated network of knowledge production linked to priestly institutions and the Houses of Life (Per Ankh). It is concluded that Kemetic healing practices represent one of the earliest documented systems for producing and transmitting therapeutic knowledge in human history, contributing to the revision of Eurocentric narratives concerning the origins of medicine and reaffirming the importatnt role of Africa, particularly Pharaonic Egypt, in the intellectual history of science, health, and healing practices

The aim of this doctoral thesis is to understand the role played by the episcopate and the secular clergy in the implementation of indigenous policy between 1680 and 1790, through the exercise of episcopal jurisdiction in the indigenous settlements of the Diocese of São Paulo. The chronological framework chosen for this study is characterised, initially, by the disputes with the Papacy over royal patronage and the attempt to apply the model of the Roman Apostolic Vicariate to the territory of São Paulo, against a backdrop of the reorganisation of the ecclesiastical structure and the development of the secular clergy’s missionary policy for the region. The period under study concludes with the implementation of Pombal’s indigenous policy and the consolidation of episcopal jurisdiction over the indigenous settlements within the diocese, achieved through the integration of the missionary network into the diocesan structure and the collaborative relationship between the secular and regular clergy in consolidating episcopal authority in the mission field. By emphasising the integration of the missionary network into the diocesan structure, we focus on the development of the secular clergy’s missionary policy and the episcopal provisions for mission churches. We also examine the relationships between the secular clergy and the religious orders involved in the religious integration of indigenous populations, as well as the role of the regular clergy in consolidating episcopal authority in the São Paulo mission field. To this end, we analyse the documentation produced at diocesan level (pastoral letters, parish registers, criminal case files) with the aim of understanding the episcopal guidelines for the catechisation of indigenous peoples and their perception of the regular clergy working in the parishes of the diocese. In addition to the diocesan documentation, our analysis focuses on the official correspondence produced by the governors of São Paulo concerning the spiritual state of the missions and the enquiries regarding the provisioning of mission churches, which have enabled us to understand the complex process of shaping indigenous policy and the role of the secular clergy in the governance and evangelisation of the indigenous peoples.

This thesis analyzes the significant role the United States assumed in controlling the Assemblies of God (ADs) following the 1936 cooperation agreement proposed by the Assemblies of God (AGs) - which involved the systematic dispatch of missionaries to Brazil - within a denomination previously controlled largely by Swedes and contested by national pastors. They imposed their organizational model on the country through the development of the ADs' publishing, media, and educational structures in Brazil. Evidence of these discourses appears in the conflicts between foreign missionaries and national pastors recorded in the minutes of the General Convention of the Assemblies of God in Brazil (CGADB), specifically regarding the importance of investing in a religious publishing house, founding Bible institutes for pastoral training, and promoting radio broadcasting. These issues were sensitive matters for a significant portion of the leadership. Three missionaries were selected as central figures in this cooperative project: Orlando Spencer Boyer, Nels Lawrence Olson, and John Peter Kolenda, due to their prominent roles in the organizational strategy proposed by the U.S. mission. This strategy encompassed the Assemblies of God Publishing House (CPAD), radio programs, and the establishment of institutes such as the Assemblies of God Bible Institute (IBAD) in 1958 and the Pentecostal Bible Institute (IBP) in 1961, the latter marking the end of the study's timeframe. This research falls within the field of the History of Religions. Key theoretical frameworks included Michel de Certeau’s concepts of strategy, knowledge, and the institution of knowledge; Roger Chartier’s concept of representations; and Benedict Anderson’s discussion of imagined communities. Methodologically, the study analyzed missionary practices, specifically their role in mediating between U.S. and Brazilian denominations, as well as the discourses found in minutes, newspapers, and their own writings, all of which aimed to foster theological training modeled on U.S. standards and, consequently, characterized by conservative and fundamentalist traits. This constellation of factors influenced the implementation of the agreement. In addition to the CGADB minutes, primary sources included the newspapers Mensageiro da Paz and Pentecostal Evangel, as well as biographies and books authored by the missionaries.

Taking as a starting point fragment of the life trajectories of Pedro Porreta, Chicão, Vivi, and other men and women, mostly Black, “pardos”, and poor, in Salvador, the capital of Bahia, this thesis investigates gender and power relations within processes of social criminalization and pathologization. The study focuses on the period between the mid-1920s and the early 1940s, which encompasses the bulk of the analyzed documentation. During this era, three themes emerged as central concerns for the elites in organizing the Brazilian nation: racial hierarchy, the fixing of gender roles, and the control of sexuality. Backed by intellectuals and operating from a eugenic perspective, the State sought to construct a white, heteronormative nation characterized by fixed, binary gender standards. The primary objective of this work is to discuss the intersectional process of criminalizing and pathologizing the lifestyles and behaviors of historical subjects deemed transgressive, deviant, or dissident in Salvador during the period under study. The central hypothesis is that these processes relied on gender markers intersecting with other social categories (such as race, class, sexuality, and occupation) and that the gender and power relations examined shed light on the diverse conflicts and tensions that manifested within this historical context.

In this thesis, we seek to analyze the role of the Álvares dos Santos family—specifically Luís Álvares dos Santos and Malaquias Álvares dos Santos, Black physicians who graduated from the Bahia School of Medicine—in the anti-slavery struggle and in networks of social relations. To this end, drawing on the theoretical frameworks of social history and the contributions of microhistory, we investigate the godparenthood and marital relationships established by the Álvares dos Santos family in the first half of the 1800s, a period during which most of these ties were formed. Next, we analyze popular patriotism and national identity in the July 2nd demonstrations and the integration of this family network into the Bahia-based July 2nd and Instrutivas Societies, whose meetings took place within the walls of the Bahia School of Medicine. We then examined the role of Black physicians in the public institutions responsible for managing the public health situation—such as the Hygiene Commission—during the cholera morbus epidemics of 1855 and 1856. Finally, we demonstrate that, despite the investments made in the public sphere—especially through the Bahian abolitionist movement—Black individuals, such as Luís Álvares dos Santos, could be viewed as intellectual authorities, albeit second-class ones, in the 1800s. Therefore, drawing on a wide range of documents—including postmortem inventories, wills, baptismal and death certificates, periodicals, books written by memoirists about the city of Itaparica and the *Historical Memoirs of the Bahia School of Medicine*, correspondence from the Bahia School of Medicine to the Provincial Presidency, competitive and inaugural theses, reports, abolitionist pamphlets, dictionaries, and literary works, among others—and by adopting an approach that bridges the macro and micro levels—we analyze the activities of the Black physicians and abolitionists of the Álvares dos Santos family, in light of the social networks to which they belonged and within which they operated.

This dissertation analyzes the role of political relations and the judiciary in facilitating the interprovincial trafficking of enslaved people in the remote hinterlands of Bahia between 1867 and 1888. The time frame begins with the appointment of Manoel José Gonçalves Fraga—a law graduate and slave trader—as Municipal Judge of Caetité, and ends with the Abolition of slavery. During this period, the study examines the legal and illegal mechanisms that enabled interprovincial trade. It demonstrates that judges, police chiefs, notaries, and other legal officials—who were often part of the same kinship and power networks as the slave-owning elites—either legitimized or turned a blind eye to trafficking practices, transforming the public sphere into an extension of private interests. By combining a meticulous analysis of the sources with established historiographical debate, this study reveals that interprovincial trafficking in the remote hinterlands of Bahia was not merely an economic phenomenon, but one deeply rooted in the political and institutional structures of the Empire. It also highlights the experiences of resistance by enslaved people who, faced with the threat of forced displacement to western São Paulo, fled, negotiated, and challenged the relations of domination. In this way, the dissertation contributes to the renewal of historiography on the internal trafficking of enslaved people, shedding light on the ambiguities, alliances, and conflicts that marked the relationships between public authorities, party politics, and slavery.
