  • Since the beginning of its settlement, one of the reasons that contributed to the urban development of São Félix was its geographical location. Located in the Recôncavo Baiano region, on the bank of the Paraguaçu River and close to Iguape Bay, the city is in a middle of a road junction, present since the colonial period. Initially this area was appointed as a tropeiros terminal, later the region became a transshipment point between land and river routes, enabling the connection between Salvador and the sertões through steam navigation, as it is the last navigable area of the Paraguaçu River, and finally , consolidated in the 19th century as an industrial city marked by the tobacco industry and as an important commercial center with the arrival of the railroad and construction of the Rail Yard of the Central Railroad of Bahia. With the decline of the tobacco industry and the Federal Government's prioritization of road transport and mobility, São Félix witnesses, at the end of the 20th century, a process of the degradation of heritage, culminating in such transformations that compromise the reading of the railway complex of São Félix and the comprehension of the site. Currently, despite the advanced state of degradation, the São Félix Railway Station is one of the few buildings in the courtyard that is preserved. With the main objective of preventing its disappearance, the present work presents an intervention proposal for the station, based on the methodological process of restoration: to know, diagnose and intervene, converting it into a pavilion of laboratories aimed at the University's cinema course. • The Church and Convent of Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Lapa are located in the center
of the city of Salvador, Bahia, in an area adjacent to the strict protection area of the
Historic Center, characterized by the presence of many religious monuments from the
colonial period. Built from the demand for new vacancies for nuns, due to the capacity of
the only female convent in Brazil (Convent of Desterro), the Convent of Lapa was
inaugurated in 1744, followed by the church. The Church and Convent of Lapa are
characterized by being an emblematic example of Portuguese-Brazilian female religious
and conventual architecture from the 18th century, being listed by the National Historical
and Artistic Heritage Institute, in 1938, as an architectural complex of high monumental
value composed by the church, convent, chaplain's house and garden area. The set, with
almost three centuries of history, is part of the collective memory of society and
religiosity, standing out for its historical, cultural and landscape value. The integrity of its
volumes and its architectural characteristics reveal the monumentality of the set and its
artistic value. Currently, the complex is in an accelerated process of degradation and is
partially in disuse, requiring its immediate restoration and adaptation to contemporary
dynamics. Therefore, this work aims to prepare a proposal for the restoration and
rehabilitation of the Church and Convent of Lapa, aiming at new uses to guarantee its
physical conditions, in response to the situation of abandonment and poor state of
conservation of the existing architectural complex. For the restoration and rehabilitation
of the complex, it is proposed the readjustment and expansion of various uses: religious,
educational, residential and commercial, in accordance with the dynamics of the
surroundings and the city, which provide the appropriation of spaces by the population.

  • The architectural complex of Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário located in Vitória, in Espirito Santo, is an important remanent of brotherhood religious architecture in the state, built in the eighteenth century, that presents an unique insertion and volume when compared to other specimens of its category. In the complex, there was an important clash for black culture of Espírito Santo, the Caramuru’s and Peroá’s conflict in 1833, which happened around the appropriation of São Benedito’s image. Declared heritage since 1942, by Brazil's National Institute for Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan), the building has substantial damages on its outdoor space, lack of continuous use and has lost its landscape value. Thus, recognizing its important attributes and values to be exalted and preserved, as its intangible and symbolic ones, it’s necessary a renovation and restoration that preserves this monument and keep its integrity for future generations. Therefore, this proposal intends to restore and renovate the architectural complex of Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário, maximizing its use and requalifying it, in a way to value its physical content and its intangible and symbolic values.

  • With the discovery of gold in the interior of Brazil, at the end of the 17th century, in lands that today correspond to the state of Minas Gerais, the Portuguese Government established a rigid network to control access to this territory, in order to prevent smuggling. In this context, along the official route “Estrada Real”, were installed customhouses then called Registro de Entrada, in which taxes levied on the right of entry of products and people into the territory of Minas Gerais were collected, also monitored the circulation of gold bars duly authorized by the authorities of Foundry Houses. In this context, the house of the Paraibuna ́s Registro was built on the banks of the Paraibuna River and the base of the Serra das Abóboras, in a strategic point, in which the geographical characteristics marked the natural limit of access to Minas Gerais from the coast of Rio de Janeiro, through the road Caminho Novo da Estrada Real. With the socio-political and administrative changes experienced by Brazil in the 19th century, the construction underwent an expansion and changes process that resulted in the current sober building with a particular architectural language, in which traditional constructive solutions from the colonial period coexist harmoniously, with the implementation of elements of neoclassical aesthetics. From the 20th century, there were strictly utilitarian updates until the property reached its current state of degradation and abandonment. In the 2000s, state authorities recognized the property as a heritage of cultural interest. Given this, the main objective of this research is the development of a proposal for the restoration and architectural intervention for the building, to guarantee the preservation of its historical, architectural, and landscape values as a rare material testimony of the colonial fiscal control network over the gold paths, in addition to its reintegration into community life after years of disuse.

  • The railway complex of Ribeirão Vermelho, is an example of Brazilian railway architecture, formed by 10 edifications, built between the end of the XIX century and beginning of the XX century. It’s safeguarded on municipal instance, since 1990, and on state instance, by the State Institute of Artistic and Historical Heritage of Minas Gerais (IEPHA-MG) since 2014. Most of its edifications are abandoned since the 80’s decade and its lack of use added to the local ambient aspects, that includes occurrence of floods, led some of the buildings to ruin. The safeguard, despite recognizing the importance of the complex, haven’t been able to stop its degradation or guarantee its preservation. This paper presents the development of an intervention proposal for this cultural heritage, grounded on consolidated methodologies of the restauration field of study, and substantiated on a large collect of data about the complex, its region and its railroad. It’s a propose that recognizes the particularities of the complex and encourages a new use, lined up with today socioeconomic dynamics of the city of Ribeirão Vermelho and aims to enable its preservation to the next generations.

  • One of the main problems faced by architects and the public authorities working in cities with urban areas protected and recognized as Historical Sites (due to their historical, landscaped and cultural value) is the absence of norms and criteria of intervention within these areas, linked to the economic, social and cultural development policies demanded by contemporary society. Goiânia, capital of the State of Goiás – Brazil – currently faces the duality between the conservation of the cultural heritage and the implementation of new policies for development, especially when it comes to the core of the city, known as the Pioneer Nucleus of Goiânia-GO, protected since 2002 by the National Historical and Artistical Heritage Institute – Iphan, the public entity responsible, at a national level, for the conservation of the Brazilian cultural heritage. However, the current perception of the NPG surpasses the comprehension of its significance given by the Institute, including the growth and diversification of the social and cultural contexts made against the historical extracts, changings, irruptions and continuities on the urban tessiture. The perception also surpasses due to the constant growth of the notion of heritage, demanding a wider analysis of the problems involving the dynamic of the city and the conservation of this heritage. Therefore, the goal is to widen the discussions about the notion of conservation of the urban heritage and set norms and criteria for the intervention upon the Pioneer Nucleus of Goiânia, also aiming to determinate clear and compatible guides with the growth and development of the city. The methodological process for approaching the place and to conduct the elaboration of studies is based on the principles set by the Ministry for Culture, Iphan and MP-CECRE about the conservation and regulation of urban historical sites; and on the theoretical hue about heritage conservation and its contemporary growth, involving the topics on cultural landscape, urban typologies, urban morphology and organization in contact with in loco investigation of the place and its particularities.

  • This study has as its object an urban complex, located in the historical site of Santa Leopoldina, in the State of Espírito Santo, delimited by four buildings built between the decades of 1860 and 1870, testimony of the beginning of city development. Although the object is constituted by a limited number of buildings, the thesis is developed in two scales: the macro, which corresponds to the urban scale, and the micro, equivalent to the buildings in their particularities.
The research aims to promote the safeguarding and recognition of the cultural values of the heritage site in its diversity - historical, artistic, architectural, landscape, memory, symbolic, documentary - that reflect the historical and cultural importance of the city of Santa Leopoldina for the memory and identity of the capixaba society. Founded as one of the first immigrant colonies in 1856, Santa Leopoldina made possible the occupation and economic development of territories in the “região centro serrana” (central mountain region) of the, then, province of Espírito Santo.
The urban core was developed on the banks of the Santa Maria da Vitória River, from the function of a trading post in the 19th century, it experienced its economic development in the first decades of the 20th century and went into economic decay, which changed that its urban ensemble was an expressive testimony of the transformations of the initial periods. Thus, since 1980, the historical site of Santa Leopoldina and 41 buildings are “tombados” (a heritage protection by the Brazilian legislation) protected by state-level listing.
The study is developed according to the guidelines of the Professional Master's Degree in Conservation and Restoration of Monuments and Historical sites (MP-CECRE), from The Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), dividing the process into three stages: the first stage is knowledge of the object of study and its context, through cadastral survey, historical and iconographic research, photographic survey and urban-architectural characteristics; the second stage consists of the diagnosis of the state of conservation and the valuation of these patrimonial assets, which indicates potentials and weaknesses to be worked on in the final stage; the last stage consists of the intervention / restoration project.
The concept of an intervention project is the maintenance of the urban characteristics, which results in guidelines for interventions on the urban scale and, based on the critical-conservative and creative restoration aspect, intervenes in the buildings of the object of study, restoring and requalifying them in according to their individual values and attributes. The diversity of aspects of the object of study contributed to a rich personal process of maturing the understanding of restoration as a disciplinary field, as well as completing the essay of new formal insertion in the context of pre-existence, as a challenge to reflect as suppressed on the cultural urban heritage and the application of the theoretical stance in this category of heritage assets.

  • The São Cornélio small palace, a neoclassical building with raised ground floor built in 1862, located in Catete Street, Rio de Janeiro. The property is testimony of transformation of the area, being remaining piece of an wide property land from XVII century, which the division of the land also gave rise to Glória Church. Its land until today preserve the dimensions of urban homestead and it has a large wooded are, contrasting with urban surroundings. Its use varied from bourgeois residence in 19th century, to asylum for orphaned girls in the first half of the 20th century and Faculty of Medicine in the following decades. In spite of its historical and aesthetic value as well a heritage protection by the Brazilian legislation - tombamento como "imóvel isolado" – by SPHAN in 1938 (proc. Iphan no. 10-T-38, inscription no. 175, fl. 30) the small palace it’s been closed for twenty years. The underutilization contributes for robbery and damages, being those related to pest infestation, failures in the rainwater drainage system and in the roof (with significant areas without roof tiles) the most significant. In view of the importance of the object of study, as well as, the losses and damages due to the poor conditions of conservation this research was created, in order to catalogue it through surveys and iconographic research. Safeguarding 19th century is essential for the next generations. One of the means of promoting the Palace´s reintegration into society´s daily life is the creation of a proposal for creative – critical restoration, with different postures for the historic property and the exterior annexes, these with greater freedom in intervention. The use of a long-term care facility for elderly was suggested based on a need in the community and does not overlap with heritage. The ILPI takes up the social character of the monument, and at time, guarantees the right of the elderly to city.

  • Between the end of the 19th century and the mid-20th century, a large number of factories were installed on the Itapagipe Peninsula, in Salvador city. With the change in the city's economic model, and the creation of new industrial centers, the vast majority of these facilities went into abandonment, like the old Jurubeba Leão do Norte Factory, which is the object of study of this research. Implemented by the sea, it consists of a set of buildings that came from a old big house built in the late 19th century, and expanded, forming much of the Largo da Boa Viagem. It is understood that the object is part of the industrial heritage of Salvador city, which is, in general, threatened or in the process of disappearing. The complex is in a process of degradation, mainly the big house, of which the roof is ruined. Thus, from an analysis that aims to identify the patrimonial values that the object carries, as well as to recognize the local demands and potentialities, it is proposed to transform it into a school shipyard, aiming at the maintenance and restoration of its factory spatiality, which carries the memory of the industrial occupation on the Itapagipe Peninsula.

The Historical Center of São Luís has a beautiful architectural collection from different periods of the colonial times, mainly built in the 18th and 19th centuries. Most of the buildings consist of a type of colonial civil architecture named “sobrado” which had housing and commerce purposes – an heritage of a period of economic rise of the State of Maranhão. Among these properties, the “sobrado” belonging to the Belfort family stands out. Located in Largo do Carmo, it is an emblematic example of the Luso-Brazilian architecture which, in Maranhão, presents unique characteristics.

The construction was built in the second half of the 18th Century by Lourenço de Belfort, an Irishman who moved to São Luís in 1736, in order to carry out economic activities related to farming and trade, in addition to taking an important role in local politics, obtaining political influence in society and accumulating wealth.

Currently, the building is a property of the Santa Casa de Misericórdia. It is abandoned and in an accelerated process of deterioration, mainly due to lack of use and inadequate interventions. Thus, recognizing significant attributes and values to be preserved, in addition to the fact that it is located in a protected area, both at the federal and state levels, an intervention is necessary to preserve this monument and ensure its integrity for future generations. Therefore, this work aims at the restoration and requalification of the Sobrado dos Belfort, enabling a use that is appropriate for the building, that values its physical structure, at the same time that it adds to the revitalization of the region in which it is located.

  • This work, named “Intervention in Modern Architecture: Restoration and Requalification of the Santa Terezinha Hospital”, falls within the scope of the discussion regarding the preservation of modern heritage. The Santa Terezinha Hospital was built as a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients, and is currently known as Octávio Mangabeira Specialized Hospital, a reference in the treatment of respiratory diseases. It is located in the neighbourhood of Pau Miúdo, in the city of Salvador. Its construction began in 1937, and it was opened in 1942. During those decades, the architecture of the city of Salvador went through the transition process between the art déco and modern styles, and the Santa Terezinha Hospital interestingly represents this hybridism, although it has almost fully assumed modernity. However, both for being a hospital, constantly subjected to changes, and for being a modern heritage, hardly recognized for its values, the Santa Terezinha hospital has been through quite insensitive interventions. The proposed project, thus, aims to rescue its modern values and update them according to contemporary technical requirements for the treatment of respiratory diseases.

  • This dissertation has as theme the set of the old Municipal Intendence - “Palácio da Águia”, located around the Marechal Floriano Peixoto Square, downtown neighborhood in the city of Maceió - Alagoas. The area where the object of study is located started to grown at the beginning of the 20th century, during the republican period and with the elevation of Maceió to the category of capital. The building designed by the Italian architect Luigi Lucarini, with an eclectic style and a neo-Gothic character, was built to represent the municipal power. The construction of this example of architecture is linked to the growth and social development of the city, influenced by the new trends in industrialization that emerged in European culture and the current hygienist measures. About the particularities of the property, it presents decorative paintings, traditional construction techniques used in construction such as solid bricks, mortar-based foundation, wood floors and, in addition to these, the use of cast iron and wood frames with glass in the frames, the use of new resulting materials from the technological advances of the time. Currently, after the eviction of the Municipal Social Assistance Secretariat (SEMAS) of the building, in 2017, the property has become the target of successive acts of vandalism, however, despite the depredations, the complex is still intact in terms of its volume. As it integrates the surroundings and composes the architectural ensemble of Marechal Floriano Peixoto Square, it is listed at the state level, so, after understanding the building as a patrimonial asset, the work intends to propose intervention actions for the main block and annex, aiming at preservation of this set, with the choice of compatible uses with the current cultural dynamics of Marechal Floriano Peixoto Square.

  • Built in 1927, the Castelinho, located in the center of the city of Ponta Porã-MS, is a
copy that has cultural value for the South-Matogrossense people, as it is a building
representative of the occupation of the southern portion of the State, with relations
intrinsic to the history of the border, permeated by land conflicts and the Economic
Cycle of the Mate herb occurred in the region between the period of 1883-1947. In
addition, its construction for military purposes can be considered as an important aspect
in the development of the city of Ponta Porã, which, associated with the arrival of the
railroad and its equipment, such as the station and the village of the railwaymen in its
vicinity, among the years from 1940 to 1950, formed an important pole for the security,
control and inspection of the border, providing part of the development of the city and
occupation around these structures. Currently, the current situation is one of enormous
degradation of the Castelinho, mainly due to the inexistence of use, associated to an
urban dynamic in its surroundings, which has been formed in a disorderly way after the
extinction of railway activities in the mid 2000s, a situation that directly affects the
reading of the representative buildings and the area in which they are inserted as
historical nucleus. Considering that these buildings, the Castelinho and the remaining
railways, were dropped between 1997 and 2008, it is necessary to preserve and perceive
these monuments, therefore, to recover the Castelinho and to help in the possibility of
its use and intervene in its immediate environment is the general objective to be fulfilled
in order to better understand, value and enhance the historical nucleus formed,
respecting the current consolidated dynamics of the area. Thus, the present work as

  • This research brings as object the second unit of Metalúrgica Abramo Eberle S/A, the
Machine Factory, popularly known as MAESA, built in the city of Caxias do Sul in the
    middle of the 20th century.
The objective of this work is the preparation of a proposal for the restoration and
rehabilitation of the MAESA complex, promoting its reinsertion into the urban context
of the city through the architectural recovery and the fomentation of its memory as a
significant part of the formation of the city and as important equity of the Brazilian
    industrial period.
Because it is a set on an urban scale, it was necessary to dismember work at different
levels of analysis and design, and thus, after the initial investigations of historical,
architectural and constructive context, two projects present themselves: the first, on an
urban scale, deals with the set and the survey of criteria for its occupation through a
masterplan, and the second, at the building level, deals with the analysis, diagnosis
and intervention project in one of the pavilions as a work cut. The result is two projects
that complement each other, in order to supply the demand of occupation of the set
and of restoration of the buildings.
The intervention was based on restoration theories of the Italians Paolo Torsello,
Amedeo Bellini and Renato Bonelli, and also included contributions from Giovanni
Carbonara, Marco Dezzi Bardeschi, among others, with the purpose of bringing to the
project quality practices developed mainly in Europe. from the theory of these scholars.

  • This work presents a proposal of conservation, restoration and rehabilitation for the architectural
complex of the former ‗Fortaleza de Sant'Anna‘ farm, one of the largest coffee and milk
producers in Minas Gerais during the 19th and 20th centuries, whose territory now houses the
‗Dênis Gonçalves‘ settlement, a recent achievement of the Landless Workers Movement
(‗Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem-Terra‘) in the struggle for agrarian reform in Brazil.
The project was constructed in three complementary stages: one involving historical research,
in order to understand the buildings‘ behavior through time; one of diagnosis, in which the
environmental and social contexts are delimited, as well as the complex‘s current state of
conservation. Finally, there is the proposition stage, based on the two previous ones, as well as
on the contemporary theoretical reflections about preservation, when solutions for the
restoration of the morphological configuration of the complex are presented, as well as
measures for its conservation and the definition of a use that positively impacts on the quality of
life and social development of the communities involved, without damaging the architectural
    preexistences.

  • No other event marked and transformed the city of Campo Grande as the arrival of
the Northwest Railroad of Brazil (NOB) in 1914. Its whistle and the good news that
arrived marked the local history. It was not long before Campo Grande received a
Railway Complex, an occupation of railway line, where its buildings and the type of
its implantation, an interdependent whole, differs from the rest of the city and which
together make up the railway landscape. After the golden age of the railroad, the
process of scrapping and subsequent privatization began in the 1990s, and in 1996,
fearing the disappearance of the material heritage left by the railway in the city, as
well as recognizing the cultural value of the railroad in Campo Grande, the
municipality, carried out in 1996 the tipping of the NOB Site, and the following year,
in 1997, it was the turn of the tipping in the state sphere and in 2009, the registration
by Iphan. The legal instruments of protection were not and are not sufficient for the
total preservation of the whole, much less the preservation of the genuine railway
landscape of the region. Over the years, the Railway Complex has undergone a
series of physical and social changes that disturb and compromise the reading of the
whole, such as the architectural project adopted and implemented to house the
Central Fair in 2004, the old street fair, or the situation abandonment of real estate
linked to work, workshops and the roundabout as a whole, examples of disruptions in
the patrimonial area that disturbs the reading of the railway landscape. Therefore, the
present work presents a proposal for intervention that seeks the rehabilitation of the
old Campo Grande railway station, seeking its protagonism against the built
environment of the central region, seeking a contextualist intervention and based on
the methodological process of restoration, to know, to diagnose and to intervene, in
order to guarantee the peculiarity that is its own, preserving its unique characteristics
and at the same time incorporating it with the new dynamics of the area to which it is
    inserted.

  • The San Francisco Railway Station in Alagoinhas is part of the degradation scenario that the railway stations of Bahia are in. This building of great representativeness was responsible for the process of occupation and development of the region, dynamization of the economic cycle and social movements. Its disuse due to the obsolescence of the Bahia rail transport, as well as the difficulty to readaptate new uses, clearly jeopardizes the integrity of this asset by compromising its historical, artistic and cultural record for future generations, in this way, the present work presents a proposal for requalification of this building restoring its importance to society. For that, a cadastral survey of space, diagnosis of its pathologies, restorative solutions and finally the architectural design with a contemporary reading in dialogue with the preexistence was carried out.

Besides its historical load, the factory set has quite unique architectural features, since its implementation ahead of its time to the verticalized typology of the main building. Despite its relevance, the old Penha Factory reaches the present day without due recognition and respect. Its operation took about 60 years, passing through periods of neglect and improper use, which resulted in a great decharacterization of the emsemble, including the loss of buildings and irresponsible additions. The present work presents a proposal for the conversion of a factory remnant to a new use, adapting the preexisting structures to current needs and normative requirements and solving the problems accumulated over the years, both pathological and architectural reading.

  • The Solar de Mello Vianna was an imposing building in the colonial period, located in the surroundings of the historical city of Sabara. The Baroque architecture of the churches highlights the richness of the golden era; the railway bridges and the working villages remind us of the iron era; and the urban expansion which adulterated the city’s landscape in detriment of the proximity of the capital. For these reasons it was named Ruins of Solar Mello Vianna, architectonic fragment marked, in its recent conservation estate, by three economic phases which consolidated and changed the city until these days. The ruins, camouflaged towards the vegetation and the earthy colour of its stone walls, rely on the memory and protection of the residents who, longing, wait for its preservation. The recent work explores the information found related to this monument, analysing, in a critical way, the traced elements of the remaining stones, looking for historical and constructive data, and modifications of the surroundings. Supported by contemporaneous restoration’s theorists, it proposes the intervention for consolidation of the ruin and of the new architectonic volume, with the objective of invigorating the usage of the space, in favour of the current demands of Sabara.

  • The present work of conclusion of the Professional Masters in Conservation and Restoration of Monuments and Historical Nuclei has as main objective to bring a critical reflection, of theoretical, practical and propositional character, about the interrelation of the physical-spatial transformations in the area of Soledade - inserted in the neighborhood Liberdade - with the socioeconomic changes that configured the identity of the place in the different times. Based on this premise and the relationship of the listed house with the avenues of the yard - as a striking element of the occupation of the area - the Avenida Lourdes da Soledade - consisting of houses 131 and 133, whose corridors give access to a village formed by approximately 35 houses - was the object of studies chosen for a pilot proposal of rehabilitation of the area. Considering the socioeconomic characteristics of the village, occupied by a low income population and facing difficulties of articulation and integration, a multipurpose project was proposed that fostered the community strengthening, generated income for the maintenance of the patrimony, currently in the process of degradation, besides contributing to the dynamics of the place, through a space destined to a community association and commercial and residential units for rent. The project therefore defends the appropriation of assets for social use as a strategy to preserve the area of Soledade, defined based on the specific characteristics of each building and / or set.

Through these trapiches the products destined to the export and import, for the local and regional supply. It was in these spaces that commercial transactions were carried out, and for a long time Salvador was considered the largest port in the Southern Hemisphere and the monumental trapiches, which together with the town of the Cidade Alta formed the frontispiece of the City of Salvador. The historical contextualization was sought the necessary understanding of the main transformations that occurred in the monument and its surroundings in its more than three centuries of existence until its current state, which is presented in a complex way, since the ruiu that reached the century has undergone a process of hygiene. • The main theme of this work is the question of urban voids and the problems between the preservation of the landscape and the functional dynamics of historical sites as an integral part of the city. The analysis focuses on Praça da Sé, in the "heart" of the Historic Center of Salvador, Bahia, encompassing both the public space and its built environment. The object of study comprises the area originated at the beginning of the XX century, after the demolition of the old Cathedral of the city, and two historical blocks, remnants of the first centuries of foundation of the site. Opened for reasons of modernization and urban development, after decades of alternating use, the emptiness is now a contemporary plaza with little public use. In order to carry out the work, extensive historical research was done, as well as the collection of various urban data to better understand the contexts in which space is constituted. Lastly, an architectural project was developed for the area that seeks to address the main problems identified, with a cut in the compatibility between issues related to the urban landscape and the complexity that permeates public spaces. From the conflict between the preservation of the artistic aspects of the historical site and its insertion in the contemporary dynamics of the city as a whole, a middle path is proposed. It is value the restoration of the singular ambience of the Historic Center of Salvador, restoring the paths and visual fields originating in the urban fabric, even in the insertion of new equipments and architectures that allow the change of the local dynamics.

  • The Boa Esperança’s Farm, located in the rural area of the municipality Belmiro Braga, Minas Gerais, was established from the donation of a sesmaria, in the 1820s, dismembered between brothers and heirs of the Barros family. The area where the object was studied began its occupation in the second half of 19th century, mainly dedicated to the cultivation of coffee, a product responsible for the movement of the economy of the Zona da Mata Mineira and modification of the landscape. In addition to coffee-growing, the farm still counts on other agricultural activities, livestock and living spaces, both workers (free and slaves) and the owner and his family, inhabiting the ennobled big house. Characterized by the use of traditional techniques of construction on land, stone, wood and solid brick, the farm was affected directly by the economic decay resulting from the coffee crisis, arriving at the present time with well maintained complex, but with worrisome deteriorations in the buildings. Being an inventoried complex in the municipal scope, it counts on a small animal breeding and is open to sporadic visits, allowing the population to know and to enjoy the spaces. Thus, and after understanding the whole as a significant heritage, the main objective of the present work is the preservation of this rural unit, focusing both on the restoration of the big house and the tulha, as well as on the adequacy of the set to new uses, after the understanding of its potentialities as living organism inserted in an important cultural landscape of Minas Gerais.

  • The following work aims to develop an architectural project of revitalization and restoration of the whole of La Merced, which is mainly composed of the chuch of Nuestra Señora de La Merced, a preserved portion of the old convent of religious Mercedarians and a free area. Specifically, the proposal developed seeks to recover the potential unity of the temple, stripping it of external and modern additions that hinder its reading as a work of art and its nature within the layout and urban space. It also seeks to grant favorable conditions to the environments of the old convent for the convenient realization of technical teaching activities for the production of traditional indigenous non-profit manufacturing, promoted by the Archbishopric of the city of Sucre, giving rise to the "Escuela Taller de Traditional Indigenous Weaving and Goldsmithing ". It also projects the insertion of a new volumetry built on part of the free area of the old convent, which refers to the lost and unrecoverable volumetry of a large part of the old convent and manages to integrate into pre-existence; Volumetry able to house own activities and complementary to the technical teaching. The set of La Merced is located in the historic center of the city of Sucre, within the limits of Intensive Conservation, of an area declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991, the church was declared a National Monument by the Bolivian State in 1967; It was built next to its convent at the beginning of the 16th century after the arrival of the first Spaniards in what was then known as the Territorio de los Indios Charcas. The protection and care enjoyed by the temple and the convent by Mercedarian religious and parishioners during the colonial period disappeared suddenly after the implementation of policies of the new government established after the independence of the Bolivian territory from the Spanish crown in 1825. In order to develop the project in a coherent way, deep historical research was carried out on the whole of La Merced, the city of Sucre and the layout of its historic center. The cadastre of the temple, its dependencies, the environments of the old one and the free area was realized by means of the method of triangulation after taking measurements in place.

  • The Nossa Senhora da Conceição Chapel of the ancient mill Penha, located in the rural area of Riachuelo city of Sergipe, is one of the most important buildings in the religious architecture of Sergipe. Built between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century, the monument is today the only remnant of the rural complex which gave it origin. Heritage listed in the Institute of the National Historical and Artistic Patrimony - Iphan, since 1943, the chapel stands in an advanced state of degradation, with the loss of all its integrated assets and with much of its collapsed east side facade, thus creating a huge gap in the building and landscape. At first, this work seeks to investigate the process of architectural and spatial composition of the mill, the history of the building since its construction, the diagnosis of existing pathologies, in order to understand the causes that led to its current state and the changes that occured in its surroundings. Based on this study, a proposal will be developed for restorative intervention of the chapel and the reinsertion of the building in the rural landscape in which it is implanted. In this way, we understand the need to recompose the missing gaps to seek the rescue of the typological plot and the spatiality of the monument, evidencing the protection of the property in its integrity and its adaptation to the local community activities.

Thus, the work is configured in such a way as to propose the restoration of the architectural object while reproposing the urban design of this area, understanding that the way it is currently configured impairs the reading of the set as a cohesive object and also impairs the enjoyment of this space and its relationship with the Church of the Rosary.

Cristal”. The intervention in the set directs his attentions to the figurative and material
aspects of the object, but without forgetting the documentary and memorials aspects
of the work. Caring for and preserving the memory of the racing tradition by
combining new activities compatible with the buildings and spaces is the great
challenge of the intervention in the “Hipódromo of Cristal”.

  • This proposal of intervention of Fort San Fernando de Bocachica aims to be carried out through a clear and precise functional recovery although with a minimal but important architectural and structural intervention. From the functional point of view, the adaptation to the hotel activity is conceived thanks to the existing compartmentalization in the building, which allows to have rooms of dimensions and spatial characteristics more or less equal that are used as rooms, with the necessary incorporation of sanitary units. On the other hand, spaces of irregular or atypical geometry are used here for singular activities such as administrative or service areas, without affecting in any case their spatial characteristics and lighting and ventilation. Additionally, the terrace is recovered as a space from which maximum visibility of the environment is obtained. The important square of arms, central and protagónica area of the building maintains its hierarchy for the two levels of the Fort. The circulation systems -both internal and external to the building- are used and maintained without major alterations. Taking into account that the building is in a good state of conservation although it suffers from a series of pathologies whose cause is in the natural deterioration and degradation of some of its constructive elements, the proposal is aimed at rehabilitating what is damaged (especially the terrace and the room of the latrines) and in a special way to stop and protect the building from the natural and human actions that have contributed to that damage. It highlights the aggression caused by the accumulated humidity product of the environment and the rains on the surface elements (walls, roof terrace, finishes), to which the force of the waves in the bases of the curtains is added.

  • This research aims to characterize the situation of the former center of San Salvador and I urban heritage. In this general context, economic cycles and human and institutional resources are emphasized, combining a historical vision interested in elucidating the great processes of continuity and rupture that would explain the urban-architectural production, occupation and transformation of the landscape. The city, founded in the sixteenth century as part of the strategy of domination of the territory of Spanish colonization, gains independence in the early nineteenth century and undergoes a great growth, from the 1950s begins a process of degradation of the central area by deflation, generating migration from residential areas to other areas of the city. However, as in many historic centers of Latin America, it remains an important witness of the history and tradition of a country. Characterizing and reflecting on this process and on instruments that can reverse its deterioration are fundamental. Especially when the challenge of establishing this and how to preserve a heritage that has suffered from both earthquakes and catastrophes and that much of its materiality is often re-erected among the rubble is added to complex problems. How to intervene in your urban heritage? It seems to be the necessary reflection.
