Many practical processes require the spreading of a liquid on a solid. The liquid may be a paint, a
lubricant, an ink, or a dye. The solid may either show a simple surface or be finely divided
(suspensions, porous media, fibers). Water, for instance, may be sucked into a porous soil, because it
tends to wet the solid components of the soil. Tertiary oil recuperation also involves the penetration
of water into the channels of a porous rock, which were originally filled mainly by oil.
When smaller and smaller volumes are considered, surface effects become increasingly important and
very often govern the dynamics and the shape of the liquid. Therefore, boundaries and interfaces play a
major role. In this course, we will study how a fluid takes its shape under various external parmeters
such as the gravity strength, the type and the geometry of the substrate, the applied boundary
conditions, and the presence of surface defects on the substrate. Dynamical effects and instabilities will
also be discussed. The emphasis of the course will be put on a joint theoretical/experimental/numerical
approach.
